President Terry formally opened the meeting with a beautiful quote from Senator Robert F Kennedy.
The Program -Bill Conole introduced our speaker Town of Skaneateles Supervisor by noting that Janet has diligently served our Village & Town for more than 38 years. Currently. Janet is completing her fourth successful year as our Town Supervisor. Janet began her remarks by noting that serving Skaneateles has been a pleasure because of the teamwork & cooperation between the village & town staffs. Janet praised Rotary for all of the community service they have rendered over the past decades. Janet reviewed the following Town issues & concerns:
Town Budget - Completing this year’s Town Budget has been difficult because of the NYS Cap on Taxes. This year several long term Town employees are retiring. Hiring & training new employees is expensive.
Austin Pavilion - Janet noted that the Austin Pavilion is now 60 years old & in need of maintenance & upgrades. The Town plans to make the needed repairs so the SRC, the SVFD & other groups can continue to use it in the years to come.
Library - Janet reviewed how the Town is working with the Library to enable it to move to it’s new Fennel St home. The Town currently uses the Fennel St site to store Town equipment & this equipment will have to be moved to a new location.
Hilltop - Ward inquired about the Hilltop Restaurant closing & being replaced by a hotel. Janet confirmed this & said the Hilltop is closing in mid- November to be replaced by a hotel built by the same organization that is building a hotel by Baxter(Hill Rom).
Pickle Ball Courts - Janet noted that many people have asked the Town to build pickle ball courts at Austing Park at a cost of several hundred thousand dollars. The tennis courts are also in need of costly repairs.
Lake Flooding - Janet reported on the efforts to control the lake flooding that is resulting from the heavy rains we’ve received. The Town is endeavoring to coordinate this among the 5 Towns & 3 Counties on the lake.
Zoning on the lake remains an issue. An updated zoning plan is awaiting Gov Hochul’s signature.
Landfill -Janet noted that Rotarian Chris Legg is working ably to resolve several Landfill issues. Efforts are being made to control & reduce the large amount of trash restaurants bring to the Landfill. Recently the Town hired a manager for the Landfill.
Street Lights - Recently the Town purchased LED light for their 283 street lights for an savings of $35,000.
Soldiers & Sailors Monument in Lakeview Cemetery recently received much needed repairs for a cost of $39,000.
COVID - Janet noted that almost everything else Town operations were affected by COVID. The Town had to adjust operations to meet COVIDs challenges.
Birds Nest - Janet responded to a question on when the Birds Nest will be razed by noting that this project was delayed by the work that was done on the water pipes in East St. This project will soon resume & a hotel will be built on this site.
Kudos to Janet - Ward, John O’Sullivan & several SRC members closed the program by praising Janet for her steady strong leadership as our Town Supervisor.
The Endings - Terry asked Dave Lee to lead us in the Four Way Test

Dictionaries for 3rd Graders ... by Ward
On Friday the 29th, Webster's Dictionary/Thesaurus were distributed to each third grade student at the State Street School. With each book was a letter addressed to the parents describing the Skaneateles Rotary club and its commitment to our community and tp our world, of the children. Due to the restrictive school COVID policies, the dictionaries were handed out by school principal, John Lawrence this year (pictured). Our club has accomplished this project each since 2010, with the exception of last year.
Kudos to project chair Bill Huba and his team for making this happen.
Polio Day Celebration &
District Conference... by Ward
PolioDay Celebration - was attended by Bill & Ward in Syracuse on Friday the 29th. The Keynote speaker was RI President Elect (2021/22), Jennifer Jones who spoke at our club a few years back. Jennifer's message was upbeat and focused on the future and reenergized Rotary, our successes and yet to be met challenges. Polio is on the wane, but we still have more to do of assure its eradication. The audience was made up Rotarians from our district and the three district to the west, south and east of us. I understand that we were honored with her first public event since the start of COVID.
District Conference - was held the following day at the same venue and RIPE Jennifer Jones was again the key note speaker. It was a one day event and the speakers and subjects exceptional. I have attended many district conferences, and must say that this one rated, in my view, one of the better ones. Kudos to DG Dana and his team that organized it.
Both of these events were available on Zoom as well, if you happened to tune in, I hope you enjoyed them as well.
