The Program: Honor Flight Syracuse
Bill Conole introduced our speaker Rob Schoeneck by noting that Rob is a graduate of the US Naval Academy & served in the Navy as a Naval Aviator. Currently Rob is the Manager of Destiny USA.
Recently Rob was named the President of Honor Flight Syracuse (HFS). Rob opened his remarks by noting that Honor Flight was founded in the US in 2004. In 2010 Honor Flight Syracuse was founded. HFS serves ten counties in the Greater CNY area & is one of the 130 Regional Hubs in the National Honor Flight Network. HFS honors CNY’s veterans by transporting them to Washington, DC to visit national monuments dedicated to their service & sacrifice. Veterans travel to DC as guests of HFS. HFS is staffed by 600-700 volunteers. On HFS Mission #1 in 2012 38 WW2 Veterans were flown to DC. This year on HFS Mission #15, 80 veterans, including 5 WW2 veterans, were transported to DC. Over the past ten years HFS has broadened their mission to offer Honor Flights to veterans of the Korean, Vietnam & Afghanistan Wars.
The HFS day starts early with a 7AM flight out of Syracuse. In DC HFS veterans are taken first to the WW2 Memorial. Then the veterans visit the Vietnam, Korea & the Marine Corps Monument. After lunch the veterans go to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Monument to observe the solemn Changing of the Guard Ceremony. When the HFS veterans return to Syracuse they are welcomed home by fire trucks, bands & thousands of cheering people. Rob noted that since it’s founding 2012, HFS has transported more than a thousand veterans to DC. Rob paid tribute to the HFS nursed who train & volunteer their time to ensure that our veterans are safe during their trip.
Last year HFS initiated a new program to honor our “Centurian Veterans”. To date, HFS has held special ceremonies for 16 veterans who are 100 years old. Bob closed his presentation by telling a few heartwarming stories of veterans honored by HFS. President Terry thanked Rob & noted that his presentation on HFS was most fitting on this Veterans Day.
