Last Week Jun 29, 2023 .... by Mary
The Beginnings: President Ed welcomed everyone to our first summer meeting at the Legion.  After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance Danny led us in song.  Guests were introduced:  Vince Magnota (potential new member, friend of Robin's and an Egg's East volunteer), Scott Heggelke(our speaker and Village Chief of Police) and Mike Panasci (Ayham's friend and potential new member).
As we were eating we were surprised by a large contingent from the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce with a big announcement.  Two of our members, Ayham Boucher and Jay Stithwill share the SKN Inspire Award.  This recognition is given to individuals under the age of 40 who have dedicated five years or more to helping and inspiring others within the community.  We are so proud of Ayham and Jay!  And, to further celebrate we have two additional club members!
Katie & Dillon Brown inducted as SRC Members
Katie and Dillon are familiar faces, having attended many meetings.  Although they were not able to be at this year's Pancake Breakfast they participated by selling tickets.  A huge welcome to Katie and Dillon!
The Program:  Bill C introduced our speaker, Scott Heggelke.  Scott has been our Village Police Chief for three years.  He spoke about staffing challenges as 24-7 coverage is provided to Village residents.  Since Scott came on board the department has updated computer equipment, radios and will be rolling out body cameras.  Most of the expense for these improvements has been covered by grant funding.  Scott stressed that the most important job the department has is to cultivate positive community relations.  He cited Coffee with a Cop, Faith in Blue and Tops with Cops as three initiatives the department has undertaken.  Scott answered a number of questions from members.  A huge thanks to Scott for his leadership of our Police Department.
We had 24 members attending last week's meeting!
Community Service Opportunity by Jay
The Alley Cat is a bike ride where participants ride around one of several pre-set courses with a bag of "meals" and perform tasks along the route. There are a bunch of route options and stops along the way with tasks ranging from just delivering the right item to the right location to completing a puzzle to unlock a secret password to move on to the next location.
Our basic assignment would be to help at the start/finish line - getting riders checked in/staffing the prize table or possibly running one of the stops along the route depending on how many volunteers they have.
The event takes place between 11 am and 2 pm on Saturday, July 15th. Depending on the exact task we might need to arrive an hour or so before 11 to help get things ready.
If you are able to make it please RSVP to me either by phone, text message, or email (315-209-0753jstith@healthstrategyassoc.com).
More information to come soon.
