Get your masks ready and party hats on, its Mardi Gras time! Come in costume for some food and fun at the Legion on Thursday, Feb 8th. Festivities start at 5:30.
The Beginnings: President Doug opened the meeting leading us in the Pledge and welcoming our guests.
Winterfest - Doug thanked Rotarians who helped make the Sunrise Club's Winterfest a great success.
Polar Plunge - He then recognized the crazy (Roatry Rascos) Polar Plunge team of Ayham, Rosemary, Chad and Jason. Thanks to their plunge into the freezing lake almost $500 was raised for local causes. See article below and videos on ourFacebook page.
Service Project - Jay brought us up to date on upcoming service projects:
> Sleep in Heavenly Peace bed build in Auburn on Saturday, Feb 10th. Please let Jay know if you will be participating ( jstith@healthstrategyassoc.com ).
> The March service project is at Samaritan Center in Syracuse on Saturday, March 23rd. See announcement below. More info to follow.
The Rotary Foundation - Bill B updated us on our club's The Rotary Foundation goals and progress. We've met our goal for Polio Plus and are at about 60% of our Foundation goal. If you want to avoid pesky reminders from Bill be sure to send your donation in.
Club Schedule - Bill also passed out the club schedule through June. Please note that because of the Pancake Breakfast the schedule has been modified.
The Program:
Allyn Family Foundation ... Meg O'Connell.
Bill C introduced Meg who heads up the Allyn Family Foundation which was founded in 1964 to support community organizations that were in need of capital. The Foundation has grown to about $140M . Meg has a long career in management of not for profit organizations. She talked to us about the Foundation's role in proactive key community strategies in both Auburn and Syracuse to build communities and overcome generational poverty and social inequity. In Auburn, the Play Space project provides a center for children and families to gather and explore. In Syracuse the Salt City Market has been a hub supporting new and diverse food vendors leading to many success stories. Mixed income housing at the Salt City Market has proven to be a great success. Currently the historic Chimes Building is being redeveloped into 152 mixed income apartments. Meg told us of the impact that Syracuse's diverse cultures as showcased by the Salt City Market influenced Micron's decision to expand in CNY. A number of questions were answered. We salute The Allyn Family Foundation under the leadership of Meg. It is obvious that Meg loves what she does and a huge thank you for her presentation.
The Ending: Lee Bennett led us in the (Four + one)Five Way Test.
SKANTARIANS TAKE The PLUNGE.... by Ward
SRC members with two friends formed the Rotary Rascol team of 6 who took the plunge into the cold waters of the lake during the annual Polar Challenge event last weekend and raised $500 for charity. The team were; Ayham (Rotarian team leader), Triton (Ayham's son), Scarlett (Triton's friend) and Rotarians; Rosemary, Jason & Chad. Give a WARM applause to the COOL team for their HOT pursuit of a SERVICE ABOVE SELF Challenge. CLICK HERE to view a video on our Facebook of the team going for their swim.
February Service Project. ... by Jay
Sleep in Heavenly Peace - bed assembly
On Saturday, February 10th, our club will be helping Sleep in Heavenly Peace assemble beds at the Finger Lakes Mall in Auburn (inside by the Savanah Bank entrance). There is a short registration before we can start helping so the organization is asking we arrive between 9:30 and 10 am on the 10th. The project runs until the early afternoon but if people can only come for part of the day that is fine.
There is nothing you are required to bring with you but we will be assembling beds so if you want work gloves or anything like that I would recommend you bring them just in case.
Please RSVP with Jay Stith(EMAIL) or call/text 315-209-0753) and registerBY CLIICKING HERE in advance if you plan on helping:
