Program - International Women's Day event -
A fantastic turn out of ninety Rotarians, spouses, friends and guests filled the Sherwood Inn’s main dining room to participate in the Skaneateles Rotary Club’s first International Women’s Day Celebration. Amy Tormey and her membership committee turned the Sherwood into a Rotary Open House with information such as Rotarian magazines, brochures, as well as posters about Youth Exchange and our Rotary Club, complete with a photo collage. Jill Tietjen and her assistants from The National Women’s Hall of Fame had banners and pictures of famous women trailblazers in American History. Jill was on hand to sign her bestselling book “Her Story: A Timeline of the Women Who Changed America” as well as the new release,“Inspiring Women of the National Women’s Hall of Fame.” Prior to dinner, guests enjoyed White Birch Wine Tasting, a raffle selection and a Mackenzie-Childs silent auction item in the first dining area, and music and hors de oeuvres on the west porch. The Sherwood donated hors de oeuvres for the special occasion and live music was provided by Edgy Folk Lite. (Donna Colton had the flu.)
President Cheryl Silvestrini opened the meeting and then turned it over to Amy. Amy talked about how she got involved in Rotary and noted that Skaneateles Rotary Club is well known for serving our community, but that there is a lingering misconception that Rotary is only for men. As Membership Chair, she wanted to dispel that misconception by celebrating Women’s Day with the Skaneateles community.
Jill Tietjen, the first CEO of the National Women’s Hall of Fame, has become the national expert on important women in American history. She is an electrical engineer, the author of several books, and an acclaimed public speaker. Jill gave an overview of the historic struggle waged by women. She vividly described how women honored in the National Hall of Fame impacted American history with their unique achievements and skills. She noted how one local member of the Women’s Hall of Fame, the courageous Harriet Tubman, made 19 perilous trips into the South to bring more than 300 people to freedom. District Governor, Deb Glisson, recounted the historic steps that led to the 1987 Supreme Court decision to allow women in Rotary. Today, Rotary enthusiastically welcomes women and many are serving in leadership positions both locally and nationally.
Amy presented Jill with a book from John Francis McCarthy and gave out Women’s day/Skaneateles Rotary mugs and Rotary “celebrating women” pins to the speakers and assistant. She also recognized Jim McQuiggan and Lori Ruhlman with a special mug for their help, as well as acknowledging the help of her membership committee. She thanked Roberta Williams for the flowers that brightened every table.
It was a memorable night for all; raising awareness for International Women’s Day and for Rotary itself. Visitors commented on the welcoming nature of our club and the enthusiasm demonstrated by Amy and her committee. Some commented that they learned things about history and about Rotary that they never knew. As members we applaud Amy for the window into Rotary (and our great club) that this successful evening gave our community.

District Assembly 2015 - April 11, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM - Vernon-Vernon MIDDLE school, 5275 State Highway 31, Verona, NY. Auburn Rotary Club 100th Anniversary - The Auburn Rotary Club is to celebrate its 100th Anniversay on Sunday, April 12th. Of note - Auburn RC sponsored the Skaneateles RC in 1927, so that this a special occasion for Skantarians as well.

SAVE THE DATE - While the annual Fathers Day Pancake Breakfast is still a long ways away, it is time to save the date in our calendars. Fathers Day this year is June 21 so please note that date in your calendar as well as the Friday AM and Saturday AM before for set-up and the Monday AM afterwards for tear down. This is our biggest fund raising event of the year and we need every Rotarian to participate to insure it’s success. ... Robin
