PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Bill Conole
ACTS OF KINDNESS - “Act of kindness is a selfless act, planned or spontaneous, performed to either help or cheer up a random stranger, for no reason other than to make people happier” This District Governor Marv Joslyn’s definition. Recently Umesh saw a young girl in Walmarts without a hand.  Umesh introduced himself to the young girl’s parents & told them he was a surgeon. Umesh referred the girl’s parents to his associate & fellow Rotarian Dr Daya. An few days later Dr Daya met this young girl & fitted her with a prosthetic hand. As a follow up, Umesh had a luncheon for the young girl, her parents & Dr Daya. It’s difficult to describe how having a prosthetic hand brightened this young girl’s life. Her father said he had been scouring the internet for more than two years trying to get his daughter a hand. This young girl’s family is very poor. Last night in our Rotary meeting Umesh presented our fellow Rotarian, Dr Daya, with a check to cover the cost of the young girl’s hand. Don’t you agree that Umesh’s selfless act fits DG Joslyn’s definition of an “Act of kindness to a T?
CEAD MILE FAILTE - In Gaelic means 100,000 welcomes. Ireland uses this phrase to describe itself as the “Land of 100,000 Welcomes”. After living in Skaneateles for 14 years I believe that Skaneateles is a welcoming town. By actively sponsoring & welcoming Youth Exchange Students our Rotary club validates Skaneateles’s welcoming attitude. Since 1996 our Skaneateles Rotary Club has welcomed over 80 Inbound YE Students & sponsored more than 106 Outbound YE Students. Next week in our annual picnic, our club will officially welcome this year’s Inbound students Tymon Juncesicz from Poland & Han Gahyeon from South Korea. I want to take this opportunity to salute our club Youth Exchange Officer Gard Lorey & his YE Team of Lee Bennett, Karen Price & Lori Ruhlman for how well they guide & mentor our YE Students.

LAST WEEK ... by Mary Giroux
The Beginnings
Thank You Letters - President Bill opened the meeting with thank you's from ClearPath for Veterans and the Skaneateles YMCA.  The grant check was presented to the Y by Cathy Powell on Monday.
Acts of Kindness - President Bill spoke about the District's  "Acts of Kindness" campaign citing fellow Rotarian Umesh Patil. Umesh  noticed a young girl with only one hand and connected her with the Aarogya Seva Gift of Hand group at the State Fair.  She was presented with a prosthetic hand made at the State Fair bringing her and her family great happiness.
The Program
Gift of Hand - Dr Daya was introduced by President Bill.  Dr. Daya thanked the club for their generous support of his Gift of Hand program.  Prosthetic hands were made at the NYS Fair this year using a 3D printer.  Two local children received hands because of this initiative with a third in process.  Dr. Daya has a waiting list of more than 4000 children waiting for hands. Currently Syracuse children are being trained on how to make these hands.  The cost of each hand is $250.  Dr. Daya's health initiatives also include clinics in Phoenix and Cleveland and a planned clinic for Syracuse.
Poland - Tymon Juncesicz, our exchange student from Yelemia Gona, Poland made a presentation to our club about his homeland.  From the mountains in the south of Poland to the Baltic Sea in the north Poland has a diverse landscape.  Tymon showed us a number of old castles that have been rebuilt after being destroyed during World War II.  Poland has a rich history dating back to their first dynasty in the tenth century.  Tymon acknowledged that the Polish language is difficult.  The club was presented with a lovely medal from Tymon's home town.
Picnic Reminder - St James Church on Thursday October 11th from 6 to 8.  Let Karen Price know if you have volunteer guests attending.  President Bill thanked Karen for again taking the lead on this traditional Welcome/Thank You picnic.
