PRESIDENT'S CORNER ... by Prez Bill
Greetings Skantarians! This past Thursday we enjoyed an excellent presentation from a fellow Rotarian about Shelter Box (please see PP Bill Conole's write up for further description - thanks, Bill!) Our Club is considering supporting this program with a grant proposal. Independent of that, this is an extremely worthy domestic and international means of assisting those in the most dire of need immediately following a disaster. If you can, please consider supporting this effort through the avenues identified in the literature provided. Next week is our International Women's Day event at the Lodge at Welch-Allyn; please buy your tickets online ASAP if you have not done so already! Thank you and see you there!

IWD Event - Prior to dinner Amy Tormey reviewed the plans and progress for the Skaneateles Rotary Club's third annual International Women's Day celebration on Thursday, March 9th at the Lodge. Almost all of the members present indicated that they have purchased tickets. Amy noted that so far we have sold just over 100 tickets. Amy urged everyone to make one final effort to sell tickets this week for this most worthy event. Amy encouraged members to bring a bottle of wine or a gift certificate for the silent auction.
Shelter Box - Our speaker, Tom Deuson, has been a proud Rotarian for twenty years. Currently he is a member of the Watertown Rotary Club. Tom began his presentation by showing a brief video of how Shelter Boxes have provided emergency shelter and vital supplies to support communities around the world overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crises. Since Shelter Box was founded by the Cornwall, England Rotary Club the organization has responded to over 270 disasters and humanitarian crises in more than 95 geographic locations, providing aid to well over one million people. When an earthquake devastated Haiti in 2010 Shelter Box rapidly deployed more than 30,000 boxes to earthquake victims. Tom noted that the Shelter Box motto is "Shelter, Warmth, Dignity." Shelter Box delivers the essentials people need to survive and to begin rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of disaster. Each Shelter Box includes a tent for a family, thermal blankets, groundsheets, water storage and purification equipment, solar lamps, cooking utensils, a basic tool kit, mosquito nets and a children's activity pack. Many Rotary Clubs in the U.S. are supporting Shelter Box. Tom asked our club to join this most worthy cause. On Saturday, June 3rd there is a Shelter box ride in scenic Henderson Harbor to raise funds for Shelter Box.

After nearly eradicating polio from the face of the earth, Rotary International has taken on another disease that impacts everyone and threatens to become a tsunami in terms of our health care system: Alzheimer’s Disease.
This is the focus of the Skaneateles Rotary Club’s third annual International Women’s Day Celebration, which is Thursday, March 9th, at the Lodge.
Rotarians in a club on Martha’s Vineyard started this now-global Rotary effort because they asked themselves: “With polio on the way out, what is the next disease that affects everybody?” The answer was clear: Alzheimer’s Disease.
While polio cripples the body, Alzheimer’s cripples the mind. Alzheimer’s not only devastates families, it devastates communities. If left unsolved, public health officials say this disease will devastate the entire health care system within the next ten years. It is being called the most critical public health crisis facing America. It is also being called a “tsunami” and “sinkhole” as told so well in a PBS documentary January 25th.
Why is it a focus of our Skaneateles Rotary Club’s International Women’s Day event? Women bear a disproportionate amount of the Alzheimer’s burden. They are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s, AND they are much more likely to be caregivers. Two-thirds of all Alzheimer’s caregivers are women.
The keynote speaker will be Rev. Cynthia Huling Hummel, D.Min. who, since being diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer's, has made it her new mission to share her story and insights about the disease. Come listen to an amazing woman's first hand experience with Alzheimer's.
