The Program - Janice Wiles - Growing food & native perennials to protect Skaneateles Lake water
Bill Conole introduced Janice Wiles, a co-founder & spokesperson for the Doce Lume Farm.
Janice opened her remarks by noting that she has lived in the Skaneateles area since !986. For the past thirty plus years Janice has been interested in & worked in growing herbs & plants that are nutritious & will help preserve the wildlife & watershed in & around Skaneateles. The mission of Doce Lume Farm is to re-naturalize the Skaneateles Lake watershed with native plants to mitigate polluted runoff from increasingly frequent heavy rainfalls & address the growing challenges of insect collapse & bird population decline. Janice stressed that the 2017 harmful algal bloom was a shocking wakeup call for everyone who cherishes Skaneateles, which is unique in the US in providing unfiltered potable water to over 220,000 homes in CNY. Today there are more than 2600 home in the watershed & 1000 homes & camps on the 35 mile of shoreline. Doce Lume Farm techniques can help preserve our watershed by building healthy “wild” soil. Janice described this process. Doce Lume Farm is working with SUNY ESF to create meadows with natural plants. Lume Doce farms can show watershed property owners, in a step-by-step process, how to landscape with native plants so they can turn a patchwork of green spaces into a quilt of restored habitat. Janice encouraged everyone to go to the Doce Lume Farm Intagram site – CLICK HEREto gain more information on the many benefits of growing food & native perennials to protect Skaneateles Lake.
Janice responded to several questions. Janice said she will send more information on Doce Lume Farm to Ward & Bill so all the SRC members can learn about this vital enterprise. CLICK HEREto view that information.
