2020 Holiday Basket
a Resounding Success!   ... by Lori Ruhlman
Thank you, Skaneateles Rotary club members! Did you hear the news? We topped $20,000 in our Holiday Basket Virtual Fundraiser, shattering records and expectations. Thanks to amazing collaboration among the committee members, club members and others in the community, we provided our local food pantries (and Skaneateles Oureach) with MORE than they expected in their efforts to make the season bright for local families in need.
During a pandemic, we successfully found new ways to reach out to the community.
A special thanks to Jay Stith, our club’s community service chair, for getting the Holiday Basket committee off to a great start.
Thanks to Holiday Basket Committee Chair Roberta Williams for believing from the start that we would not only break records, but top $20,000.
Thanks to all Rotarians who donated time, talent & treasure to help us reach into the community to all our families, friends and neighbors who contributed so much to make this one of our most wide-reaching, inclusive fundraisers ever.
President's Year End Message   .... by Dave Lee
It is my pleasure to take a little time to reflect on and highlight our Club’s accomplishments for this past year.  The list is impressive:
  • Two incredible record-breaking fundraisers, carried out on a virtual platform. (who knew?) Our biggest beneficiaries this year being the Skaneateles and Spafford food pantries and the Skaneateles Outreach, as well as Meals on Wheels.
  • Collecting over 4,000 pounds of groceries in “Our feed the Community” drive.
  • Providing lunch for the poll workers on election day
  • Presenting dictionaries to third grade students
  • Met and far exceeded our Rotary Foundation goals
  • World Polio Day recognition event and dollars for Polio Plus campaign
  • Trail building at Baltimore Woods
  • Highway cleanup
  • Feeding over 200 Boy scouts at their Klondike Derby
  • Donating to more than 20 other worthy causes, Salvation Army kettle duty, and more!
Our success is due to the way in which everyone worked together to meet the challenges we faced. It demonstrates that we truly are a service organization.  We also need to give extra thanks to the fundraising and community service committees for their talent and hard work to spearhead these activities.
The astounding part is this was carried out under the siege of a worldwide pandemic.
Without being able to meet live we have adapted to virtual, and the club continues to thrive. Even to the end of February, no one could have imagined we would be meeting weekly while sitting at our kitchen table. Who would have believed we could continue our successful fundraisers from there as well?
Thanks to the technology we have not only kept the lights on but discovered a groundbreaking way for members to participate and attend meetings from anywhere in the world. We inducted 5 new members this year, many of whom we have only seen on the Zoom screen, but they have eagerly jumped right into our activities.
For those of you we have not seen on our zoom meetings lately, you are still able to keep up with us through our outstanding newsletter, website, and our presence on social media. Our deep website provides volumes of information and chronicles the current and past activities of our club. In addition, it provides a convenient window into the world of Rotary International.
It is an honor and a privilege to be able to serve as president of a thriving and growing club, and I want to thank you all for your dedication, and the contribution of your time, talents, and dollars to make it so. Let’s look forward to how we can be of service in 2021 and the hope that the pandemic will soon be behind us.
 Thanks, and be safe!    Dave
