FALL COMING EVENTS—Our club has several exciting programs & events I the coming months
October 18th - Roosevelt “Rick” Wright, PhD Capt. USN (Retired)---Rick will share with some of his experiences in academia & in our US Navy. Rick is still active with SU’s Athletic Program mentoring athletes.
October 25th- Our club will celebrate Rotary World Polio Day—Our club has contributed almost $20.000 to Rotary’s Polio Plus over the past decade. One of our members has raised $16,000 for polio in the past 2 years! Club member Cathy Powell NP will speak on polio & its impact on the US & the world.
December 6th- Our annual Holiday Benefit in the Skaneateles Country Club. This gala event is usually “sold out” & is one of our club’s major fundraisers. All of the $8,000 + raised is distributed to our local food pantries & charities literally before the sun comes up the next day. Cheryl Silvestrini has agreed to chair this year’s party. All of us can pitch in to make this event a success.
December 13th- Is our club Holiday Party for our members, spouses & guests. This party is always a warm intimate way to usher in the Christmas Season.
PolioStoppers Topped $16,000
The PolioStopper project just topped out at $16,000 raised for the eradication of Polio. Past RI President (2016-17), John Germ contacted Ward, this past week, for 30 PolioStoppers for which he is making a $3,000 contribution to PolioPlus. The PolioStoppers are a mix of the 2016-17 Theme pin, 4 Way Test and End Polio Now inserts, which will be completed and shipped by month end.

The Beginnings
Welcome - President Bill opened our special Thank You - Welcome picnic evening with a warm welcome to our volunteers, students, host families, spouses and club members.
Pancake Breakfast Acknowledgements - Mary Giroux, Pancake Breakfast chair, thanked everyone for all of their hard work and dedication in making the 50th Pancake Breakfast a memorable community event. Mary acknowledged were the Allyn Foundation, vendors and sponsors.
Youth Exchange Students -
Gard Lorey then extended a huge welcome to our 2018-2019 exchange students and host families. Tymon Juncesicz is from Poland and Han Gohyeon is from South Korea. Both Tymon and Han expressed their gratitude and happiness as exchange students. Gard talked about the exchange program and how it hinges on the availability of host families. Current host families were thanked and Gard asked that people spread the word about the need for host families.
Thanks for the Picnic - President Bill also expressed appreciation to Karen Price for putting together the evening as she has done in so many past years.
The Program - All present enjoyed a variety of appetizers followed by a delicious dinner of pulled pork and barbecued chicken. Dessert was a beautiful cake decorated with the flags of Poland and South Korea. In addition to the yummy food there was great conversation and comradery!
50/50- Suspended for the week, however mums and pumpkins were raffled off by the Interact Club to raise money for exchange student travel.

Outbreak Countries:Those countries that have stopped indigenous wild poliovirus but are experiencing re-infection either through the importation of wild or vaccine-derived poliovirus from another country, or the emergence and circulation of vaccine-derived poliovirus: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Syiran Arab Republic, Somalia, Kenya, Papua New Guinea & Niger.
Key At-Risk Countries: Low levels of immunity and surveillance leave countries at risk of polio returning. To ensure that every country stays free from polio, it is essential to reach every child with polio vaccines and to strengthen disease surveillance: Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Guinea, Iraq, Lao People's Democratic Rep., Liberia, Madagascar, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, South Sudan and Ukraine.

PASSING THE BUCK / THE BUCK STOPS HERE
Most men in the early west carried a jack knife made by the Buck knife company. When playing poker it was common to place one of these Buck knives in front of the dealer so that everyone knew who he was. When it was time for a new dealer the deck of cards and the Knife were given to the new dealer. If this person didn't want to deal he would "pass the buck" to the next player. If that player accepted then "the buck stopped there".
