PANCAKE TICKETS SALES - The pancake breakfast ticket packets will be distributed by John Moran at this week's meeting. It is important that we sale as many tickets as possible between now and June 21st (Pancake Breakfast Day), as it is a way to get the information out to the community ... and very importantly ... the pre-event sales provide us with the upfront cash flow to purchase needed materials. I heard a rumor that if you miss the meeting, you may be assigned two packets of tickets vs the usual one packet. This could be just a rumor, but then again, you may not want to take that chance.

Making-up in Rotary-talk, is not about making-up with a lost friend, is about visiting other Rotary clubs in your immediate area, or in other parts of the country, or in the world as you travel for pleasure or business. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet many interesting Rotarians and to make new lasting acquaintances, and glean new and interesting ideas for projects to bring back to our club. I have traveled to many places in our world in my professional life and as a tourist, and have visited Rotary clubs on those trips when ever the opportunity has been available. As a result, I have life long friends around the world. During my business travels, I seldom spent a weekend alone camped out in a lonely hotel room as my new found Rotary friends shared the part of the world with me, and I have learned more about Rotary and it many wonderful works than I could in a lifetime of local club meetings. Try it, you'll like it.

Robert and Robyn Cooper were inducted into our club last week with Gard Lorey as their sponsor. Rob and Gard attended Skaneateles schools together. Rob is a sales rep for Printmall and also a high school umpire and referee. Robyn sells residential properties for Realty USA. She and Rob have been married for two years and enjoy living in the village. They are both interested in getting involved with Youth Exchange and community service opportunities. Since they first expressed interest in joining our Rotary Club, they have attended meetings regularly and have shown true commitment. They follow Cathy and Doug Powell as our second married couple to become Rotarians.

Our Program: Skaneateles School District Superintendent [SCSDS], Ken Slentz, presented an overview of the SCSD Budget Proposed for the 2015-2016 School Year. School budgeting in New State verges on the arcane but Ken Slentz’s presentation was straight forward. SSD’s 2016 Budget of $30,910,606 is a 1.98% increase over last year’s budget. To keep this year’s increase under 2% required the SCSD staff to do a great deal of prioritizing, calculating & recalculating. Ken & his staff closely reviewed every expense & every option to save money. Ken noted that comparatively, SCDS, spends less per student than similar Districts & less than the statewide average on both instructional & total expenditures.
Ken stressed that the “return” on SCSDS’s budget is the excellent performance of Skaneateles students. When compared to high performing peers across the state Skaneateles ranks very near the top ranked school districts. He noted that his staff’s thoughtful planning, purposeful design & wise investment strategies ensure that our students will have the greatest advantages today & in the future. To achieve consistently good results calls for effective management of staff, community involvement & critical professional partners. Ken underscored how critical Proposition #3 the “Capital Project” is to the district. Ken urged passage of Proposition #3 by comparing the “Capital Project” to maintaining our “homes”. Passage of Proposition #3 will provide safe & secure & healthy learning spaces. He responded to several questions by members on various aspects of the budget.

SAVE THE DATE - While the annual Fathers Day Pancake Breakfast is still a long ways away, it is time to save the date in our calendars. Fathers Day this year is June 21 so please note that date in your calendar as well as the Friday AM and Saturday AM before for set-up and the Monday AM afterwards for tear down.
