PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Bill Conole
SALUTE TO OUR MEMBERS - I want to take this opportunity to salute the members of our Skaneateles Rotary Club for how much you do individually & collectively to serve our community. Our District 7150 District Governor, Marv Joslyn, is encouraging clubs to plan & to implement “Acts of Kindness”. From my decade long experience with our club I know that our members are performing selfless acts of kindness on an almost daily basis throughout the year. In a future column I will list some of the good works & major events & projects our club carries out.
CIVIL DISCOURSE - One of the most appealing aspects of Rotary is its’ ability to bring people from various backgrounds, faiths & professions together to serve the common good. Two of our recent meetings amply demonstrated that Rotarians can engage each other in civil discourse. Reflect on how valuable Rotary is to our community & to our wellbeing. Without question Rotary helps knit our communities together.
MEMBERSHIP - To ensure that Rotary continues to be a positive force in our community, our goal in the coming year must be to strive to build our club by recruiting new members. I urge every member to recruit new members.
RALPH JURGENSEN - Best wishes to Ralph as he undergoes surgery this week. Ralph has been a stalwart member of our club since 1978 & is a friend to all.

LAST WEEK ... by Mary Giroux
The Beginnings
Bottle stopper draw- Ward announced that eight Rotarians found the newsletter link for the bottle stopper draw, however only three were present at Thursday's meeting for the drawing.  The lucky winner was Suzette Grinnals.  Keep looking for more "clicks" for bottle stoppers in future issues of this newsletter.
The Program - Dana Balter, candidate , 24th Congressional District
President Bill introduced Dana Balter, candidate for the 24th Congressional District, and Renee Vogelsang who works with Dana.  Dana talked about her background and the reasons she is running for U.S. Congress.  She then addressed a number of questions from Club members and guests. Questions raised included: the current state of politics and civil discourse in the U.S.; the economic status of Syracuse and related issues including affordable housing, education, transportation and job opportunities; the rebuilding of route 81:  solutions to Central New York's economic issues; veteran's issues; and clarification that Dana is indeed a long term Central New York resident..
Happy Dollar Note - Jamie Ciaccio's happy dollar affirmation that we live in a country where we can have opposing views and discuss them was applauded by club members.
50/50 -  Put on hold for the week, will resume on October 4th.
Guests - Guests included Dana Balter, 24th Congressional  District candidate, and her co worker Renee Vogelsang, Sue Moran (John's spouse), Pat Conole (Bill's spouse), Carolyn and Gary Corbett (Bill Conole's friends) and Debbie Sochan (Mary Giroux's friend)

DID YOU KNOW?
BYING THE FARM - During WW1 soldiers were given life insurance policies worth $5,000. This was about the price of an average farm so if You died you "bought the farm" for your survivors. CLICK for a bottle stopper.
