We need volunteers to work the Clams & Corn concession at the Fireman's Days, Sept 1st and 2nd. The fireman support our Pancake Breakfast event with parking assistance and a sound system, this year. Time to give them a helping hand. Jack has the signup sheet and is looking for Rotarians to volunteer for one hour shifts.

THE BEGINNINGS
Introductions - Mary Giroux opened the meeting by welcoming Ron Kenney, Director of Operations for SAVES.
Fireman's Field Days - Jack Hyatt asked that anyone who has not signed up to help serve corn and clams at the Field Days (September 1st and 2nd) consider doing so. Most slots are filled but a few more Rotarians are needed. The sign up sheet was passed around. If you can help, contact Jack Hyatt. The VFD is a great help to us at our pancake breakfast so let's reciprocate.
Books, books and more books! -Cheryl Silvestrini is coordinating the packing of children's books at the end of the upcoming Jordan Fall Festival. The library has a book sale at the festival and Cheryl has arranged for our club to take the unsold children's books for Books for the World. Bookleggers are needed at the festival in Jordan at 5 o'clock on Sunday, September 16th. Contact Cheryl if you can help.
THE PROGRAM -
Ron Kenney, Director of Operations from SAVES (Skaneateles Area Volunteer Emergency Services) spoke. Ron began his career as an Army Medic and became a licensed EMT in 1995. After spending 20+ years in Nashville TN working as an EMT with the fire department Ron decided to move north, closer to his Maine roots. He settled in Auburn where he worked as a supervisor for TLC for five years. He came to SAVES while still working at TLC and is now here fulltime having just recently taken over the Director of Operations position. Ron spoke about SAVES as being a volunteer, not for profit organization. As such, all revenue collected from patients either through Medicare, Medicaid, third party payors (insurance) or private pay goes back to SAVES to support services. Services are available 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Staff is made up of both employees and volunteers. CLICK for reader's draw. Equipment is expensive with the cost of a "bare" ambulance being about $160,000. This does not include the cost of all the medical equipment needed.
Ron spoke about a new concept in medicine which started in California. Paramedicine is delivery of certain types of medical services to the patient in their home under the direction of the patient's physician. Also included is the assessment of the patient. This is an outreach type of medicine geared toward those with limited access to healthcare and the elderly. One of its goals is to reduce reliance on expensive emergency room services. It is not yet available in NYS.
Ron talked about working in Skaneateles and the rewards of being in a small community. Letters from two Skaneateles residents recently appeared in the Skan Press citing their positive and life saving experiences with SAVES. If you meet a SAVES employee or volunteer in your journeys be sure to thank them for their valuable and much appreciated service!
