Skaneateles Rotary is Joined by Two New Members
Pledging to "go forth and promote positive change in the world", Tyler Lorey & Jay Stith joined the Skaneateles Rotary Club on Thursday, Nov. 07.  They were inducted by Amy Tormey, membership chairperson, assisted by club president, Doug Powell and new members were sponsored by Gard Lorey.  We are all looking forward to youthful insights, dedication and contributions to the continued Service Above Self to our local and international communities.
In addition to Gard pinning the Rotary pins on each new Rotarian, Tyler pinned Gard (his father) with a Rotarian Sponsor pin.

Dictionary & Thesaurus Distributed to 3rd Graders.
President Doug & Cathy Powell distributed copies of Webster's Dictionary & Thesaurus to the 4 classrooms of State St. School on Nov. 6th.  When asked what a Thesaurus was, one creative student responded that "it is a dictionary for dinosaurs".  To their pleasant surprise, the books were accepted with  "a hardy thanks, a firm handshake and direct eye contact".  A positive glimpse into our future generations.
This is the 10th year that the Skaneateles Rotary club have provided the students with dictionaries as part of their commitment to support the education of our youth.  The project is currently chaired by Past President,  Bill Huba, who is supported by Ward,  the project's originator.
LAST WEEK ... by Mary Giroux
The Beginnings:
Doug Powell welcomed everyone to the American Legion for a great spaghetti and meatball dinner prepared by Brad and Ann Cole.  After dinner there were a number of announcements by club members:
  • Cathy and Doug Powell are collecting new and gently used coats for Skaneateles Outreach,  They may be dropped off at the Powell's house or brought to next Thursday's meeting (the 14th).
  • John Moran is once again organizing the bell ringing for the Salvation Army and passed around a sign up sheet.  Please check your calendars to see when you can do this.
  • Cathy and Doug Powell learned that a thesaurus is a "dinosaur dictionary" when they passed out dictionaries to third graders at State Street School this past week.  Thank you to Bill Huba for organizing the project.
  • Cheryl Silvestrini reminded us that tickets for the Christmas Dinner may be obtained from Amy Tormey.  Next week Cheryl will have a sign up sheet for members to bring raffle gifts to the event.
  • John Sullivan reported that three Skaneateles students are in the interview process for the foreign exchange program and that is the most from any District club.
  • Bill Conole spoke about the 100th anniversary of the American Legion Post.  A dinner to celebrate this important anniversary is being held at Skaneateles Country Club on November 10th.  And, the Skaneateles Girls Lacrosse team has once again organized the flag project to remember Veterans.  There will be a ceremony at The Sherwood on Monday, November 11th, which is Veteran's Day.
  • Jack Hyatt told us of the passing of John Manila, former club member and past president.  Ward Vuillemot told us of Carl Tucker's passing.  Carl  was also a club member and past president.  A moment of silence was observed.
  • Cheryl Silvestrini passed a card around for Loren Barrigar who suffered a serious injury to his hand.  Loren has befriended our club by playing his music at our Women's Day events.
The Program:
Welcome Jay and Tyler!  Jay Steth and Tyler Lorey were inducted to the club with Amy Tormey, our membership chair, presiding.  Amy talked about Rotary's purpose and values prior to Gard Lorey (Sponsor for Jay and Tyler) pinning them,  Jay and Tyler were presented with the new fashioned Rotary hats, Tshirts and aprons so they will be ready for the 2020 pancake breakfast.
50-50 was suspended for the week, to return on the 14th.
Guests   KC Lorey and Andy Stevens
Attendance:  26 Members, or 50%   Current membership = 53 (soon to be 55)
SHARING COATS with those in need
Thanksgiving and cold weather is on the way and there is a need in our community share with those in need; warm coats, mittens and gloves  (hats if donated should be new).   Cathy & Doug are working with the Skaneateles Outreach to distributed the donated winter wear.  Please bring your donations to a meeting or deliver to at the & Doug home.  The collection will end on November 14th, in time for a pre-Thanksgiving distribution.  What a great way to share our sprint of Thanksgiving.

D7150 Rotary Leadership Institute - Nov. 16th  ... by Ward
The Rotary Leadership Institute is being held in Henrietta on November 16, 2019 and with it a wonderful importunity take your next step up the ladder of RLI training and information sharing.  (remember; learning never stops in our cycle of life)
If you have not participated in the past, "try it, you'll like it".
If you are new to Rotary, there is not a better to learn about it.
If you have been it Rotary for some time, it is a great way to refresh and learn more.
If you have completed one of two of the Parts, now a opportunity to step up to the next level.
If you have completed Parts I, II & III, you are not done (there's more).  The graduate sessions change each year.  This year it will be focused on Fundraising and project development, which we Skantarians have had much dialog.  This is a great chance to learn new techniques and share with others of the: what, how and when.
Cost: $100 - BUT WAIT.  Your BOD has approved a 100% reimbursement following your attendance of the event.
Oh BTW, Ward has promised those Skaneateles Rotarians that attend RLI in this Rotary year a hand-crafted bottle stopper with a RLI logo mounted in it.
