LAST MEETING, Sept 5 …. by Mary Giroux
THE BEGINNING: President Elect Andy led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed our guests:  Lena (our lovely exchange student from Germany), Tom Fairhurst (our speaker) and Tom Harvard (Ayham's friend and potential new club member).
ANNNOUNCEMENTS:
> Thank Yous:  Andy thanked all of our members and spouses that helped with clams and corn at the Firemen's Field Days.
>  Calendar:  Bill B handed out the calendar through the end of 2024.  If it gets lost in your papers just look for the yellow!
>  Matthews Walkathon:  Bill B told us about our upcoming service project.  It will take place Saturday morning, Oct 5th from 8:30 to 10:00.  All you need to do is sign up and walk a two mile route with fellow club members to earn donations to the Golisano Children's Hospital.  It's that easy and you can enjoy coffee and pastries at The Sherwood at the end of your walk.  More details to follow.
THE PROGRAM:  Andy introduced Tom Fairhurst, long time Skaneateles resident and pickleball aficionado.  Tom is heading up the fundraising effort to build six pickleball courts at Austin Park. Tom explained that all of the sports facilities and children's play area in the park have been funded by private fund-raising efforts. The pickleball project will cost about $450,000 and to date $121,000 has been raised. The account for funds is held by the CNY Community Foundation. The courts would become the property of the Town and be maintained by the Town Parks Department.  Pickleball is the fastest growing sport with a robust network in the US.  Contrary to belief it is not an "old people" sport with the average player age of 38.  It fosters community and socialization.  Thanks to Tom for spearheading this effort and telling us about the project!

Duck Dash......Save the Date!
The annual Duck Dash at Skaneateles Creek is coming up and your help is needed.  It takes place on Saturday, September 28th.  More info to follow.
