PRESIDENT'S CORNER ... by Prez Bill
Greetings Skantarians!
This past Thursday we were privileged by the attendance of a fellow Rotarian, Kristin Earle, who gave a very informative presentation on the CNY Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Thank you PP Bill Conole for arranging her visit.
Earlier in the week PP Ward Vuillemot and myself were able to distribute thesauruses and dictionaries at the State Street middle school; easily the most fun and gratifying time one can imagine. Thank you, Ward, for arranging this donation and coordinating the distribution with the school principal.
After our regular meeting another meeting of the International Women's Day committee was held to update and refine planning for this event; again I urge anyone wishing to help to contact Amy Tormey forthwith and offer their assistance. Given the turnout this weekend in Seneca falls I think we can look forward to great interest in our own event.
Thank you, one and all and I look forward to seeing you this Thursday.
Dictionary & Thesaurus Project: ... by Ward For the past seven years, the Skaneateles Rotary club has distributed Dictionaries and Thesauruses to the State Street School 3rd graders and 5th graders. Principal Steve Wedrick and Club President, Bill Huba, along with Ward Vuillemot distributed 105 Dictionaries and 93 Thesauruses on January 18th. This year marks 30 years since Rotary launched PolioPlus, its campaign to rid the world of polio. Beginning on Rotary's anniversary, 23 February, Rotary members worldwide will be holding events to celebrate three decades of polio eradication progress.
Since 1985 Rotary and its partners have helped reduce the number of cases from 350,000 annually to fewer than 400 in 2014, and they remain committed until the disease is eradicated. Rotary has contributed more than $1.3 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2 billion children worldwide. In addition, Rotary's advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute over $10 billion to the effort.
Before the global scope of PolioPlus, individual clubs with Rotary funding were attacking the disease closer to home.
In 1979 Rotary members and delegates of the Philippine Ministry of Health looked on as volunteers administered drops of the oral polio vaccine to children in the Manila barrio of Guadalupe Viejo.
When James L. Bomar Jr., then Rotary president, put the first drops of vaccine into a child's mouth, he ceremonially launched the Philippine poliomyelitis immunization effort. Bomar joined Enrique M. Garcia, the country's minister of health, in signing the contract committing Rotary International and the government of the Philippines to a joint five-year effort to immunize around 6 million children against polio at a cost of about $760,000.
In a 1993 interview, Bomar recalled how the brother of one of the children he'd immunized tugged on his pant leg to get his attention and said, "Thank you, thank you, Rotary."
The success of this project set the stage for Rotary's top priority to rid the world of polio. Since Rotary introduced its PolioPlus campaign, the number of polio cases worldwide has dropped 99 percent, and the virus remains endemic in just three countries -- Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
Footnote: There were only 35 cases of polio in 2016/wtv

Winter Fest: Prior to dinner John Rooney reviewed plans for the 2017 Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary Club's Winter Fest which takes place on January 27th and 28th. John passed out sign up sheets for our members to assist the Sunrise Club with set up and ticket sales for Winter Fest. President Bill showed out members the beautiful certificate the Sunrise club presented to our club for supporting the ice sculptures that will adorn our village during this year's Winter Fest.
"I Found it!" : Ward was pleased to announce that six members found his cleverly concealed hand crafted pen offer. Kathy Crelot won the drawing and was awarded one of Ward's keepsake pens. Ward is encouraged by this evidence of increased Skantarian readership. To stay abreast of club news everyone should read the Skantarian.
Cystic Fibrosis Program: Kristin Earle, Development Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation CNY Chapter, began her presentation by explaining that Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life threatening genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. More than 30,000 children in the US have CF. Alarmingly, about 2,000 children and young adults in the 16 counties served by the CNY CF Chapter have CF. The mission of the CF Foundation is to cure CF and to provide all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatments and ensuring access to high quality, specialized care.
Kristin stressed that she was not seeking donations, but instead is asking us to support CF by getting to know the CF community. Kristin noted that CF is an isolating disease. CF victims often have impaired immune systems and often have been forced to live in semi isolated conditions. As a result of this , CF victims and their families love to meet new people who are willing to reach out to them. Kristin displayed the CF Foundation CNY Chapter 2017 Special Events Calendar and asked our members to review the calendar and to please come to a CFR event to meet the CF community.
