PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Mary Giroux
Our four legged guests, Cuse and Hotel, brought a smile to everyone’s face this week. Tisha Knickerbocker told us about her experience training and working with Cuse. Her experience led her to volunteering her talents at Clearpath training puppies to be service dogs and emotional support dogs for veterans. Tisha’s story is an inspiration.

50th Skaneateles Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast -President Mary noted that members who signed up to assist John Moran & Jim McQuiggan in soliciting merchants to seek their sponsorship for our 2018 Pancake Breakfast will soon be receiving guidance via e-mail on when & how to start the solicitation process.
Women’s Day Dinner - Amy Tormey reviewed plans for this year’s Women’s Day Dinner scheduled March 8th. Amy noted that members & guests can sign up & pay on line this year.
THE PROGRAM Patriotic Service Dog Foundation
Bill Conole introduced our speaker Tisha Knickerbocker, a Canine Trainer from Patriotic Service Dog Foundation. Tisha served in the US Marine Corps from 2010 to 2010. While in a Navy Hospital recovering from a severe back injury, Tisha met Therapy Dogs. These Therapy dogs are trained to help care for & to soothe injured people. These well trained, caring dogs piqued Tisha’s interest in training dogs. Tisha decided to learn how to train “Service Dogs”. These dogs are trained to assist impaired & handicapped people by providing emotional support & by learning how to assist these individuals perform daily tasks. Training Service Dogs is a lengthy, labor intensive project. Tisha utilized the same Service Dog Training Model that Clear Path for Veterans Canine Program uses. By using this method, over a 2- 3 year period,
Tisha successfully trained her first service dog, Cuse. Tisha brought Cuse & a new puppy she is training, Hotel, with her. Cuse is a calm, well mannered, keenly intelligent German Shepherd. When it was time for the 50-50 drawing, Tisha asked Cuse to draw the winning ticket & Cuse did so with ease. All the members had a chance to hold & pet Tisha’s cute puppy Hotel. Tisha stressed that there is a tremendous demand for service dogs. The training for these dogs is very demanding & barely 50% of dogs selected for this program are able to successfully complete it. Over the past few decades service dogs have amply demonstrated how valuable they are to impaired people who benefit greatly from their assistance. These dogs require 2-3 years of training that costs about $24,000 per dog. In addition these dogs require ongoing training to keep their skills sharp. Currently Tisha is working, as a volunteer, with the Clear Path Canine Program. Tisha responded to many questions & comments from our members
50/50 -Service Dog Cuse drew winning number for Bill Conole. After Bill failed to draw the Queen of Spades, one member said Bill should have let Cuse draw for the queen
