My Dear Friends and Fellow Rotarians,
We encourage you to invite friends and family members to join us for one of our meetings. If that person is interested in seeing what Rotary is all about because they are considering becoming a member, their first meal is on the club. If they return their subsequent meals are on them, or as a sponsor you may wish to pay for them. In the event that you invite a friend or family member to come for dinner they are most certainly welcome to join us as your guest.
I personally would like to thank all of you for what you do for our club and our community.

ANNUAL CLUB PICNIC - Mark your calendar for Sept. 24th, 6 to 8 PM - The Annual Pancake Breakfast Thank you and Incoming Youth Exchange Welcome event is to be held at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. This is a family/spouse/guest event. Planned menu is: pulled pork, chix, for non pork eaters, salt potatoes, beans and hopefully the caterer's wonderful corn bread. We ask our Rotarians to bring an appetizer. Thanks to Karen Price for once again chairing the event.
NOTE that there is to be no alcohol at this event, so please do not bring any beer, wine or other spirits.

Last Thursday morning a few of our Skaneateles Bookleggers gathered a the Waterman Elementary school to sort and pack a full pallet of text and story books destined for the children of the world. They were joined by Joe Benedict, the incoming Interact president. Joe is planning to put together a book collection project in the school hallways, to glean gently used children's books, this coming school year. Our thanks for our volunteers; Chuck O., Roy M., Bill C., Ward V, and Joe for accomplishing this task on a very short notice. One little book, makes a big difference to a small child.

Jake Vicomi, returning Exchange Student - Jake Viscomi opened his talk by explaining that his host city, Kanazawa is located on the West Coast of Japan. Jake was one of three Rotary exchange students in this city of more than 500,000 people. By Japanese Standards this is a small city. Prior to going to Japan Jake studied the Japanese language. This helped him to adjust to speaking this challenging language.
While in Japan Jake stayed with 5 host families. Three of the host families had some facility for English, two did not. Jake noted that the Japanese are very serious & are very focused on their education. Japanese students go to school 6-7 days a week & their schooldays are long. As a result there is very little socialization in Japanese Schools compared with American Schools. The better Japanese Students go to “cram schools” after their regular classes are over. The education in these “cram schools’ is even more intense. Jake grew to like Japanese food.
Jake noted that Japanese table manners are different from ours. Japanese slurp their food with gusto. Except for one or two McDonalds & a Subway there are no American fast food restaurants in Kanazawa. Jake pointed out that since his host city was not bombed in WW2, it still has many old Japanese buildings & homes. Jake feels he benefited tremendously from his experience as a Rotary Exchange Student in this non-westernized Japanese city. Jake closed by thanking the Skaneateles Rotary Club & Rotary District 7150 for giving this unique educational & cultural experience.

Each year, Rotary Day at the United Nations invites more than 1,300 Rotarians including many Rotary International Directors, Foundation Trustees, past Senior Leaders, and guests to come together at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The program is designed to inspire and educate all participants as well as provide insight into the relationship between Rotary International and the United Nations.
This year, Rotary Day at the United Nations will take place on November 7, 2015.
This unique opportunity offers both a visit to the United Nations Headquarters in New York City as well as participation in panel discussions featuring leaders and officials from the Rotary International, the United Nations and its affiliated Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
Rotary Day at the United Nations also includes a special program for youth interested in humanitarian service. Youth have the opportunity to hear about some projects that Interact Clubs are working on, an overview of the UN and much more.
Spouses and friends are also invited. We look forward to seeing you at the next Rotary International Day at the United Nations. Register now to secure your participation in this collaborative showcase.

The 2015-16 Rotary Youth Exchange Outbound students have been selected and will be departing this summer for a year as exchange students abroad. They are: Sofia Darovskikh, going to Finland, and Zach Driscoll going to Germany. We congratulate them upon their selections and wish them all the best on their "adventure of a lifetime".
Our Inbound students will be: Daniela Fadic Contreras, from Chile, and Vincent Lambert form France.
