THIS WEEK, Sept. 21st, 6 to 8 PM - The Annual Pancake Breakfast Thank you and Incoming Youth Exchange Welcome event is to be held at the St James Church Fellowship Hall. This is a family/spouse/guest event.
Menu: Pulled Pork, Roasted Chicken, Baked Beans, Salt Potatoes, and Cole Slaw and Salad.
Beverages: Iced Tea and Lemonade available (feel free to BYOB)

Skantarian Robert Holloway Will be Missed
Bob Holloway, a member of Skaneateles Rotary since 2012, passed away on September 10, 2017. A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, Skaneateles on September 22nd at 1PM. Skaneateles Bookleggers at Jordan Fall Festival Cheryl Silvestrini was enjoying this Sunday at the Jordan Festival when she came across and booksale with lots of children books that were going to the dumpster, if not picked up by locals. She got permission to glean them for BFTW and gave Mary and Ward a call. Bottom line .... we (Cheryl, Mary and Ward) packed the remaining 15 cartons for our open pallet. Unfortunately, we had to leave behind a bunch. Kudos to Cheryl for being quick on the decision and phone, and to Mary & Ward to jumping in for a quick Rotary packing project. Cheryl picked out a book to take home.

Summary Notes of Sept 14, 2017 Meeting... by Ward
Your Board of Directors met last week and the following is a short summary of discussions points and resolutions.
Skaneateles Rotary Foundation financial statement, supplied by Kathy Crelot, was distributed and reviewed.
Worthy Cause Update Cheryl Silvestrini updated the BOD on the pro-forma "giving" budget will be prepared by her and her committee.
Worthy Cause contributions - were approved for: Skaneateles Lake Assc., & Upstate Foundation.
Dictionary Project -update given by Bill Huba. Distribution scheduled for October 11th.
Program Schedule - reviewed and discussed by Bill Conole. . He urged members to continue to send program ideas his way.-
Shelter Box - Cathy Powell gave and update on the district grant for two Shelter Boxes
YE Medical Expense - Approval of some excess medical expenses from pervious student.
Bill Holloway's - sudden passing was announced. Memorial services will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, Skaneateles on Sept. 22nd at 1PM.
Resignation - Gary Caldwell has moved out of state and his resignation was approved.
BOCES - Nov. 9th - meeting is being finalized by Prez. Mary. The Sunrise Club have been invited to join us. The meeting starting time will be 6 PM, and cost $20. RSVP required.
Next BOD Meeting - October 12th. at 5 PM at the Sherwood.
PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Mary Giroux
Dictionary Project: We're moving to completion on a couple of club projects. Thank you to Bill Huba for organizing the Dictionary Project. We are scheduled to distribute them on October 11th at state Street School. Thanks Bill!
Shelter Boxes: Our Shelter Box Grant Project is nearing completion too thanks to Cathy Powell and Ward Vuillemot. We have the invoice to pay and the display Shelter Box will be set up in the high school in October. Shelter Boxes are currently being used in the ongoing hurricane relief and recovery so this project is timely. Thanks Cathy and Ward for all of your work on this!
Picnic: Looking forward to seeing everyone at our picnic next week at St. James. Please extend an invite to any volunteers that worked with you at the pancake breakfast. And, we will welcome our new exchange students Kashyap from India and Eduarda from Brazil.

The Beginnings
ByLaws & Constitution - The club revised by-laws and constitution was voted upon by the membership and approved.
Bob Holloway - Acting President Bill Conole informed members that Rotarian Bob Holloway passed away on September 10th. Services for Bob will be at St James on Friday September 22nd at 1:00PM.
Homeless - Amy Tormey asked members to assist one of her students, Yorgin, from Guatemala. For some time Yorgin was homeless. Yorgin is a hard working honor student. Recently a loving couple adopted Yorgin & is in the expensive process of obtaining a legal guardianship for Yorgin. Legal fees will be at least $3,000. Amy asked members to contribute money to assist Yorgin & his adoptive family cover these legal fees.
RI Convention - Ward Vuillemot announced the 2018 Rotary International Convention will be in nearby Toronto on June 23, 2018. This a great opportunity to meet Rotarians from around the world.
The Program
Before returning YE student Emma Bohrer was introduced, Lee Bennett pointed out that Emma Bohrer’s family is one of 3 families in Skaneateles that have had 3 of their children become exchange students. Emma’s brothers Calvin & Mattice were exchange students in Hungary & Brazil a few years ago.
Gard Lorey welcomed Emma Bohrer home & wished her a happy birthday. Our members sang happy birthday to Emma & enjoyed her birthday cake.
Emma thanked everyone & noted that last year she celebrated her birthday with her Japanese Host family in Kanazawa, Japan. Emma greeted members her newly adopted Japanese language. Emma noted that she quickly bonded with her host mother & family. For presentation Emma wore a beautiful komono. Emma presented pictures of her host Japanese Rotary Club. Adapting to Japanese cuisine proved relatively easy for Emma. She showed our members some of the ancient temples she visited. Emma’s school peers warmly accepted her & made her stay in Japan all the more memorable. In Japan students go to school 6 days a week. When Emma left Kanazawa her entire class & all of her Japanese friends came to the airport to bid her farewell. Emma thanked our club for making her stay in Japan possible. Emma’s mother Connie rose to thank our club for sponsoring 3 of her children to become exchange students. Connie said the exchange studet experience were “transforming” for her children
50/50 - Was won by Al Coates. The elusive Queen of spades is still buried in the dwindling deck. Al donated his winning to Yorgin.

LONG TERM EXCHANGE PROGRAM
Outbound- Maddie Bohrer to Brazil & Carter Stregiel, to Belgium & Malcolm Lombardi to Taiwan
Inbound - Kashyap Lalwala from India, hosted by Steve & Sandi Frackenpohl & Eduarda Honorato de Freita from Brazil hosted by Tom & Jesse Wingfield.
SHORT TERM EXCHANGE (summer) PROGRAM (STEP)
Zoe Franciamone to Udine in July '17, Italy returned with host sister. Ilaria in August.
200 Tickets at $20 each are be sold to members, friends & neighbors between now and October when 10 tickets (2 per week) will be drawn weekly with the winners receiving $50 each. The winning tickets will be recycled into the draw-bin for drawings the following weeks. So ..... multiple chances to win on a single ticket.
The whole event ends on Nov 16th, with two tickets will be drawn for $250 & $500. The $200 draw dates are: Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26 & Nov 2, and the $250 & $500 tickets will be drawn on Nov 16.
Cheryl Silvestrini will have the tickets for sale over August & September. Do not miss out on this opprotrunity as it is limited to 200 tickets.
This is fun way for our Club to raise up $2,750 to use for worthy causes throughout the year. We can only make the maximum amount ($2750) if ALL 200 tickets are sold. The key is for ALL members to participate in selling (and buying) tickets.
