Your Board of Directors met last week and the following is a short summary of discussions points and resolutions.

Minutes of the May Board meeting were approved (complete current and past minutes may be viewed on the website - member sign-in is required)
Club Rotary Foundation goals were set: $5400 for Annual Giving (based on $100 per member) & $2000 for Polio Plus
The Club Picnic has been tentatively scheduled for 9/20 at St. James. More information to follow.
2018-19 District Grant - An additional $500 for the YMCA District Grant was approved, which has been approved, to make it an even $5000.
Ball Game - The club will attend an Auburn Doubledays game on 8/30 in place of the regular meeting. Tickets are $5. More to follow.
Programs were reviewed - Congressman Katko is scheduled to speak on 8/23. Dana Balter will be scheduled to speak but no date has been determined.
There is a new program format: club members will be assigned dates to coordinate speakers.
Dictionary/Thesaurus project -Funds were approved for the 2018 Dictionary/Thesaurus School project.
Membership was discussed. Specifically, how do we as Rotarians attract new members, as well as retain those we have.

PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Bill Conole
Change is never easy. Overt past century Rotary Clubs have gradually adapted to changing times. About three decades ago, Rotary Clubs started accepting & recruiting women. As hard as it is to believe today, prior to the 1970's Rotary Clubs were all male, Today women play a critical role in leading Rotary Clubs & helping their clubs better serve our communities.
In 2018 Rotary Clubs face major challenges in recruiting & retaining young members. US Rotary declining membership numbers confirm that this is a pervasive challenge. Interestingly, two of our recent District Governors strongly recommended that clubs consider making changes to how they recruit & retain young members & how & where they meet. As a result of several major alterations, the Baldwinsville club has, over the past few years grown from 40-58 members. PDG Peter Cardimone has restructured the Tully Club. The Auburn Club has grown from 40 members to 48 members. I will appreciate your candid feedback on this issue. I also invite members to join me on visits to the Baldwinsville Auburn & Tully Clubs. These visits can also fulfill DG Marv's Passport Program. During the coming months we must study ways to reverse recent trends.

THE BEGINNINGS
Introductions - President Bill opened the meeting by welcoming Stacy Drake, Dale’s wife.
Baltimore Woods Fundraiser – Run For The Woods - Drake Stacy gave a presentation for a fundraiser for Baltimore Woods. It is a 5K trail run or 1K kids run through Baltimore Woods. In past years Skaneateles Rotary has had numerous volunteers to assist in this worthy event. She is reaching out for our support again this year. The event is on August 19th. Contact Stacy, or Baltimore Woods, to see what you can do to help.
Fireman’s Field Day’s, Sept 1st & 2nd - Jack Hyatt is coordinating the Rotary’s support for volunteering for the Clambake. As you know the Firemen are a big help to the Pancake Breakfast. So, lets return the favor, as we always do. Jack handed around a list to sign up for one-hour time slots. Times are going quick, but there are still several hours that need coverage. Contact Jack to reserve an hour.
THE PROGRAM - Club Assembly The meeting was reserved as a general session to bring the members up to speed on activities of the club.
Rotary Foundation Giving - The BOD has established as our goal for 2019. Our Annual Giving target will be $5,400. Which is $100 per member. Our Polio Plus target is $2,000.
2018-19 District Grant - Through the direction, and efforts, of Cathy Powell, we successfully received a grant for $2,000. Our Club will contribute an additional $3,000, bringing the total to $5,000. This will be donated to the YMCA, to be used for assistance to families and individuals so that they can utilize services at the Y, that without assistance they would not be able to afford.
Upcoming Events
Rep. John Katko: August 23rd– Rep Katko will be speaking to Rotary. We are in communication to Dana Balter to set up a date for her to speak.
Double-Days Baseball: August 30th– Tim Donovan has arranged for this night at the ballpark. General Admission tickets are $5. It will be a great time.
Annual picnic: September 20this tentatively being targeted for the date to hold our annual picnic to thank the volunteers at the pancake breakfast. And it will also be used to welcome our new exchange students – Tymon Juncesicz, from Poland, and Han Gahyeon, from South Korea. Reserve the date. More information will follow.
Future Program Schedule - This year’s schedule will be developed by the entire club in an effort to spread out the responsibility and to get a broader range of interesting speakers. President Bill handed out a schedule of who is responsible for each week’s program. And he also handed out a list of potential speakers to help anyone that needs some ideas on possible speakers.
Membership - President Bill led a preliminary discussion on the state of our membership. He acknowledged that membership has been slipping and that we need to be looking at new approaches to attract new members and maintain current members. He shared some of the things that other clubs are doing in the area. There was a lot of discussion that status quo was not working and that we need to be looking for new ideas. More efforts will be forthcoming and everyone is encouraged to share their opinions on possible new approaches.
50/50 - was won by Robin Jowaisas – so what else is new! However, he picked the 6 of Hearts
