THE PROGRAM: Lieutant Colonel Matthew Coyne, Syracuse ROTC Program
Connor introduced the speaker for tonight’s program, Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Coyne. He is a professor of Military Science at Syracuse University and leads the Army ROTC program. Lieutenant Colonel Matthew is a New York native and earned his commission in the Military Police Corps from the University of Scranton. He described the ROTC program, the history behind it, and the four leadership principles to live by. The ROTC program began with President Wilson in 1916 through the National Defense Act and today it produces 5,000 to 6,000 officers a year. It is a 2-to-4-year program consisting of both undergraduate and graduate students and is currently hosted at 274 colleges across the United States. It teaches cadets the basics of the army, tactics, and assessment so they can get ready to be a commissioned officer. The Syracuse ROTC program began in 1918 to support WWI efforts. It is one of the longest continuing programs in the nation. In 1944, the GI bill formed, which helped them pay for college and brought in almost 10,000 freshmen overnight. This past year, 78% of cadets had scholarships paid for by the government.  The mission of the Army ROTC is to recruit, retain, and commission leaders of character and excellence who are committed to Army values and prepared to lead this Nation’s Soldiers. Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Coyne ended the program with these four principles to be an effective leader. The first principle was, “Be the leader you want to follow.”  The second is, “Learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable.” The third is, “Move to the sound of the guns.” The last is,” Get to know your soldiers and what motivates them.”

THE ENDING: Bill Conole led us in the (Four + one) Five Way Test
