Rotary members, friends, guests and students were all at the Lodge on Thursday evening to celebrate International Women's Day. Dr Sally Roesch Wagner gave an inspirational talk followed by two of the Ambassadors from the Matilda Joselyn Gage Foundation's program which focuses on empowering and inspiring young women to become agents of change. Many thanks to Amy Tormey and everyone else that worked on the fourth annual IWD Celebration making this event another great success.

Question: What is RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)
Answer:Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is a leadership program coordinated by Rotary Clubs around the globe. Each year, thousands of young people participate in this program. Young people ages 13–30 are sponsored by Rotary Clubs to attend the event run by the club's district committee. Participants are chosen for their leadership potential. Rotary Clubs and the Rotary District cover all expenses for the participants. The format of the event vary from district to district, but commonly take the form of a seminar, camp, or workshop to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the event's curriculum.
Skaneateles Rotary clubs typically send two HS students to a District 7150 RYLA held at Cazenovia College for 3 days in July.

Please mark your calendar, as well Friday, June 15th AM and Saturday, June 16th AM for set-up, and Monday, June 18thAM for tear down. This year marks a very special milestone of 50 consecutive years holding our Club’s biggest fund raising event and we need every Rotarian to participate to insure its continued success. Please schedule to be in town that weekend to help out at this “fun filled” community event! This service project, which supports many worthy causes, only works if every Rotarian makes a full commitment. Thank you for your support.

Answer: Almost there ... but ....Today, the three countries of focus are Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan as they have never stopped transmission of endemic wild poliovirus. The countries are working to deliver vaccination services to their people, to carry out sensitive disease surveillance and to cooperate to immunize migrating populations across their common border. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY CELEBRATION
The WELCOME - Skaneateles Rotary Club President welcomed everyone to our club’s 2018 International Women’s day Celebration. Mary introduced celebration’s master of ceremonies Amy Tormey. Amy opened her remarks by reminding everyone that this is our Rotary Club’s fourth annual celebration of International Women’s Day. This year our club’s celebration falls on the same day that International Women’s Day is observed in the US & all over the world. Amy introduced Rotary District Governor Phyllis Danks & Past District Governor Deborah Glisson & everyone’s “Mr Rotary” Ward Vuillemot. The evening’s thoughtful invocation was given by Cindy Walker. In her opening comments, former Mayor of Auburn Melina Carnicelli, emphasized how important an evening like this is. In the US & throughout the world women are finally receiving the recognition they have long deserved. On behalf of the Skaneateles Zonta Club, Melina presented bouquets of yellow roses for each table. Melina explained that yellow roses symbolize feelings of friendship, wisdom & optimism, a fitting theme for tonight’s celebration. Amy noted that not only are we fortunate to have a renown keynote speaker but we will also hear from the Girl Ambassadors for Human Rights This program empowers & inspires young women to become agents of change on the local, national & global stage. Amy introduced our Girl Ambassador guests. Amy encouraged everyone to participate in the raffles & silent auctions. Amy asked her committee to rise & be recognized for organizing this gala evening. Amy recognized all the Rotarians & Rotary host families present & thanked them for their service to our community & to our Rotary exchange students.
The PRESENTAION-Lori Ruhlman introduced our evening’s keynote speaker Dr Sally Roesch Wagner. Dr Wagner was awarded one of the firs doctorates in the country for work in women’s study & is a founder of one of the first college-level women’s studies programs in the US. Dr Wagner is the author of numerous women’s history books & articles. She is the Founder & Executive of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center for Social Justice Dialogue in Fayetteville, New York. Dr Wagner saluted Rotarians for their service to our communities & for their holding splendid events like this to honor women & their many contributions to our nation. Dr Wagner related how she became attracted to women’s studies & the women’s movement many years ago. She noted that freedom of religion & freedom from religion was one of Thomas Jefferson’s major tenets when he helped found our nation. Women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B Anthony & Matilda Joslyn Gage were pioneers in starting the drive to secure the right to vote & equal rights for women. To Dr Wagner’s dismay Gage was all but lost to history. Gaining Gage her rightful place in history became a mission for Dr Wagner. With a group of like minded women & men, Dr Waner raised over a million dollars to restore the Gage home & to set up “The Matilda Joslyn Gage Center in Fayetteville, NY. As a result of the extensive research Dr Wagner conducted on Matilda Gage, each of the five major rooms in the new center is dedicated to one of the causes-from women’s rights to treaty rights that Gage advocated. Dr Wagner quoted Gage as saying “I think I was born with a hatred of oppression”. Matilda Gage dedicated her life to the ongoing fight for justice –gender, race class etc—for all people. Throughout her presentation Dr Wagner stressed the need for all of us to listen to each other & in particular to listen to people with different points of view. With her words & through her admirable work, Dr Wagner inspired everyone in the audience.
Lori, in introducing the Girl Ambassadors For Human Rights, noted that these young ladies are being trained to empower & to inspire young women to become agents of social change. The primary “Ambassador” speaker spoke compelling on how her experience as serving as a Girl Ambassador has changed her life in so many ways. Listening to the eloquent young “Ambassadors” reaffirmed our faith in the young leaders of today. These young leaders will help guide our nation to a brighter future.
The CLOSING REMARKS—In her closing remarks Amy gave credit for this memorable evening to her 2018 IWD Committee & to Rotary. Great events like this are in keeping with Rotary’s motto of “service above self”. Kudos to Amy Tormey all the work she did to make this special evening possible

Adults and teens from around the country will spend one week performing free hands-on home repair projects for elderly, low-income and/or disabled families, organizers said. They will be here June 24 to 30.
Mark your calendars and plan to attend our April 19 meeting when PDG Deb Glisson will speak about the project and its many benefits to needy homeowners and service experiences of gleaned by the participants of the Workcamp.
