THE PROGRAM - Skaneateles YMCA & Community Center
Bill Conole noted that Dorthea Hughes, Executive Director of the Skaneateles YMCA/CC, comes to our club annually to update our members on the recent events in the YMCA/CC. Dorthea opened her remarks by presenting a brief history on how the Auburn YMCA was invited to manage our Community Center in 2012. Robin Jowaisas & Chuck O’Neil played key roles in making this decision. Dorthea reported on this year’s successful YMCA/CC “Scholarship Fund Drive. Over $37,000 was raised to enable needy people to gain access to Y membership & programs. Over the past two years Dorthea has overseen a major building project that added a new , handicapped accessible, hockey rink & a new basketball/Volley ball Court. In addition, Dorthea has expanded the health/wellness facilities, added bathrooms on the 2ndfloor & reworked the main entrance. Dorthea stressed how expensive it is to maintain a large, multi-purpose building like our Y/CC. Reflecting these positive upgrades, membership is now at an all time high of 4400. Dorthea thanked our club for it’s generous support over the past 6 years. Thanks to Dorteha’s management the Y/CC is now operating on a break even basis.
YE CANCER FUND RAISER - Eduarda Honoatio de Friela, our exchange student from Brazil, told members how, several years ago, a Rotary Exchange Student contracted cancer.
