MAKING UP AT CEDER KEY ... by Ward
On Monday, the 15th Ward attended the Cedar Key Rotary Club (see picture above), where fish and clams were on the menu. The speaker, Pelican Pete, spoke of the danger of taking flying or floating morsels of fish on a line. He pointed out that "one could get hooked on the habit". The fine-master, Sam Egret did an exceptional job of netting over 50 clams from the members, which will be donated to the local Mullet school. President Cecil Darter reminded the members of the upcoming sea food festival to take place at the CK Fish Cleaning station the coming weekend. Tickets can be purchased from Tim Gull at the Fishing Pier.
Guest, PDG Ward, mentioned that he was selling shares in a rather large bride in Brooklyn. Proceeds will to the Save the Sea Birds Fund.
PS... Visiting other clubs during your travels can be "a hoot"- try it, you'll like it!"
2018-19 ROTARY THEME ANNOUNCED
Rotary International President-elect Barry Rassin laid out his vision for the future of the organization on Sunday, calling on leaders to work for a sustainable future and to inspire Rotarians and the community at large.
Rassin, a member of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, unveiled the 2018-19 presidential theme, Be the Inspiration, to incoming district governors at Rotary’s International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA. “I want you to inspire in your clubs, your Rotarians, that desire for something greater. The drive to do more, to be more, to create something that will live beyond each of us.”
I hope everyone is enjoying the sunny day and warmer temperatures! We had a great meeting last nite with fellow Rotarian Dr. Doug Powell sharing his vast knowledge of acupuncture and his experiences working with the military to treat our veterans. Thank you Doug for all that you do to heal and for sharing your talents with others.
The 50th Pancake Breakfast committee also met last nite and plans are being set in motion to make this a special event.

THE BEGININGS:
Skaneateles Sunrise 2018 Winter Festival: President Mary passed around a signup sheet for members to volunteer to support the Sunrise Club next Saturday January 27th from 11:30-2:30. John Rooney spoke briefly on plans for this year’s event. Mary encouraged all members to support this worthy event.
Pasta Dinner: Kathy Crelot reminded members that on this Sunday January 21st the American Legion is having a Pasta Dinner in their beautiful 2nd floor. Tickets are $10 for adults. Kathy invited all to come.
Normandy Trip: Kathy invited everyone to a luncheon his Saturday January 20th in the Legion. After the luncheon Kathy will brief everyone on an exciting trip to historic Normandy, France this August . The trip is open to all.
Podium Elve: President Mary thanked Chuck Williams ( alias “Podium Elve”) for fixing our podium castor.
Thank You Notes: Mary read thank you notes from the Skaneateles Outreach organization & from the Spafford Food pantry thanking our club for their generous support resulting from our 2017 Christmas Fundraiser.
THE PROGRAM
Acupuncture - Bill Conole introduced club member Dr Doug Powell. Doug had a long successful career as a Ob/Gyn specialist. About 10 years ago Doug began to study the efficacy of medical acupuncture. Five years ago Doug had the opportunity to study medical acupuncture under the guidance of Dr Joe Helms, the father of American Acupuncture. Much of Dr Helms recent work has concentrated on the use of acupuncture on our military personnel. Through his research & study Dr Helms found that acupuncture is effective in alleviating pain &, in many cases, improving function in 50-85% of the military personnel tested.
Acupuncture was proven to be effective even on severely wounded & deeply traumatized soldiers. Doug pointed out that Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder (PTSD) is now called Post Traumatic Syndrome (PTS) by military medical personnel. Doug stressed that PTS is not a “disorder”. With soldiers in combat PTS is not a matter of weather but when & how the soldier reacts to the stress & trauma of combat. Doug cited many specific disorders & syndromes that acupuncture can effectively treat. Most impressively, acupuncture’s proven ability to alleviate pain is resulting in a marked decrease in the use of opioids among military personnel. Doug cited several cases where acupuncture was successful in alleviating pain among military & civilian patients suffering from trauma & stress. Doug also cited cases where acupuncture increased function among patients suffering from strokes & traumatic accidents. Today the success of acupuncture is gaining wide recognition among all of the branches of our military. Our Special Operation Soldiers have become strong proponents of the efficacy of acupuncture. Doug noted that in the Air Force reduced opioid usage in stress management by 75%. In the midst of our national opioid crisis this is welcome news.
Doug continues to give frequent seminars on medical acupuncture with Air Force medical personnel. Doug has also volunteered his acupuncture expertise with the Clear Path For Veterans Staff.
