PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Bill Conole
Fundraising - Synergy is an apt word to describe how our club comes together & cooperates to make our major club fundraising events so successful. Our annual Christmas benefit raises almost $11,000 every year for our Skaneateles Food Pantry, the Skaneateles Outreach Office & the Spafford Food Pantry. Usually checks are made out to these local very worthy charities before the sun comes up the next day. Every year this event draws a sellout crowd of about 230 guests. For this event to be a success our members have to sell tickets, solicit our local merchants & contribute considerable amounts of their time & talents. Every year our club members pull together & rise to the occasion.
Holiday Events - In addition to our annual Christmas Benefit our club has a longstanding tradition of “Ringing the Bell” to raise money for the Salvation Army Kettle Project. This year the program was imperiled this year when Tops moved to discontinue all solicitations in their stores. John Moran, John Paddock, Chuck O’Neil & several others discreetly & diplomatically negotiated with Tops to allow our Salvation Army Bell Ringing in Tops. Another example of our club’s unstinting efforts to help those in need in our community.
Thanks - As club president I want to thank every member of our Skaneateles Rotary Club for all you do to serve our community. This week I attended a funeral for a Skaneateles lady who worked tirelessly to assist those in need in our community. Her epitaph can be readily adapted to Rotarians. “As Rotarians we must remember that when we leave this earth, we can take nothing that we have received-only what we have given: a full heart enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage.
Annual Christmas Fundraiser, Dec. 6th

The Skaneateles Rotary Club’s Annual Christmas Fundraiser will be held on thisThursday, December 6th, at the Skaneateles Country Club. We will begin with a happy hour at 6 p.m. followed by a family-style turkey dinner at 7 pm. Tables are sold out. Contact Amy Tormey attormeyesl@verizon.netto check for any available openings.
Don’t Forget…The organizing committee needs our Rotarians’ support in securing raffle prizes. The goal is to have at least 50% of attendees win a prize. While local merchants and professionals will be canvassed again this year for donations, all Rotarians are also asked to donate prizes such as a bottle of wine, a gift card, etc. Please let Roy MacDonald,David Piper or Mary Giroux know in advance of the event what you will be bringing in the way of a prize.(click on their names to activate an email to them) Even if you can’t attend the event, please contribute a raffle prize.

RING THE BELL - Our annual Salvation Army Kettle project, at the Tops Market commences Friday, December 7th. The schedule can be found on our WEBSITE by going the the Site Pages on the left side of the Home page, or CLICK HERE. I found it! -Ward drew from a pool of three for a beautifully crafted ice cream scoop. Suzette Grinnals was the happy winner of the scoop, her reward for responding to the Reader's "I found it" link in the newsletter.
Rotary Giving-Bill Buterbaugh, our Foundation Chair, advised that the annual letters concerning The Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus giving will be mailed in January. Anyone that would like to make their contribution early to take advantage of the charitable giving tax deduction may send their check to Bill Buterbaugh. Checks should be payable to "The Rotary Foundation." If you would like it to go to PolioPlus, write "polio plus" in the memo/note line on your check.
200 Club -Cheryl Silvestrini has quite a few tickets left to sell. We are deferring the first draw until later in December.
Christmas Dinner Tickets -Amy Tormey reported that about 230 tickets for the Christmas fundraiser have been sold.
Bells, bells bells -John Moran passed the sign up sheet around for bell ringing for the Salvation Army at Tops. Please sign up if you haven't already done so.
The Program - The Wineland Sagas, by Milton Franson
President Bill introduced our guest speaker Milton Franson. Milton is a researcher into the lost Viking colonies of America and author of The Wineland Sagas.
Milton, sporting his "Lief was here first" sweatshirt, told us of the many clues discovered concerning the Vikings presence in North America centuries before Columbus and the Pilgrims. Writings of grapes and salmon aided in pinpointing the region Lief most likely landed in. It is believed, based on writings and found items that the Vikings spent time in Naragasset Bay and Newfoundland. Milton wrote a fictional trilogy based on research into Viking travels.
50-50 was won by Umesh, however he pulled the queen of Spades is sill hiding. Umesh donated his winnings to the club. Thank you, Umesh

Summary Notes of Nov 29th, 2018 Meeting... by Mary Giroux
Your Board of Directors met last week and the following is a short summary of discussions points and resolutions. (complete current and past minutes may be viewed on the website - member sign-in is required)
The minutes of the October meeting were approved
The Club's annual meeting was scheduled for January 10, 2019 due to the number of activities going on during the month of December
A motion was made and approved for the split of the proceeds of the Christmas dinner to the food pantries and Skaneateles Outreach. 5% of the proceeds will be deposited to the Skaneateles Rotary Foundation CNY Community Foundation account. The remaining 95% will be split between the Skaneateles Pantry, Spafford Pantry and Skaneateles Outreach in the same proportion as 2017.
Ticket sales and business donations for the raffle at the Christmas Fundraiser dinner were discussed.
The Club Christmas dinner to include spouses and guests will be at the Sherwood Inn on December 13th
The Club 200 fundraiser was discussed and the decision made to postpone the first drawing as ticket sales have only covered payout expenses at this point.
The annual Salvation Army bell ringing begins December 7th at Tops. More ringers are needed.
Kathy Crelot requested a leave of absence from the club which was approved by the Board. We shall miss Kathy and look forward to her return.
Grants were discussed. Cathy Powell has completed the process for the 2018/2019 grant cycle. The club appreciates Cathy's hard work and diligence. Mary Giroux will explore options for a grant for ClearPath for Veterans in support of their Dogs2Vets program.
Worthy cause donations were reviewed and the Board approved a donation to Laker Limo.
President Bill Conole reviewed upcoming programs, the District Passport and Acts of Kindness initiatives and new member possibilities.

200 Club Fundraiser... by Cheryl
It may not be as exciting as cracking eggs or flipping pancakes, but the “200 Club” Raffle is an easy way to raise money to benefit community and youth groups. Here’s how it works: we sell 200 tickets at $20 each for a total of $4,000. We give away $1250 in prizes which leaves us with $2750 to use for worthy causes.
We will sell tickets starting 10/18/18. Two $50 prizes will be drawn at our Club Meetings on 12/13, 12/20, 1/3, 1/10 & 1/17. On 1/10, we will draw a $250 winner, as well as the $500 Grand Prize winner. Also, all weekly winners will be put back into the raffle and be eligible for the Grand Prize!
We need to sell all 200 tickets for this raffle to work as outlined, so please consider selling at least 5 tickets to family, friends, co-workers, etc. – and don’t forget to buy your own! Cheryl will have tickets available at all weekly meetings. If paying by check, please make payable to Skaneateles Rotary Foundation. Be sure the contact information is completed on the ticket and give that portion of the ticket to Cheryl along with ticket money/checks. Thank you and good luck to everyone!
