Nigeria sees no wild polio cases for one year
Today (24 July 2015) marks one yer since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus.  The country is on the bring of eradicating the paralyzing disease.  If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two:  Afghanistan and Pakistan  ... from Rotary Weekly
Rotarians, Stand Proud  -  for your part of Polio eradication from our world?
LAST WEEK: ... by Bill Conole
Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) - President Bill opened the meeting by reminding our members how close we are to eradicating Polio. For several decades Rotarians worldwide have taken the lead in the campaign to end the Polio epidemic in our time. President Bill said that one of our incoming District Governors major goals is to fully implement “EREY”-Every Rotarian Every Year. This program calls on all Rotarians to make a contribution to our Rotary Foundation. Even though our club has been very successful in meeting our Foundation annual fund raising goals, we have not attained the 100% participation required by “EREY.” President Bill cited attaining 100% participation as a worthy goal for club in the coming year
Paul Harris Award - President Bill asked Amy Tormey to make our Paul Harris Fellow Award presentation to our PHF honoree, Nancy Lewis, who was selected by a committee. Amy briefly reviewed how Nancy has served our community & Rotary. Amy noted that Nancy Lewis is a well respected educator in the Skaneateles School District. Over the past few years Nancy has hosted several Rotary exchange students. Amy asked one of Nancy’s associates Pat Brown to review Nancy’s many contributions to the Skaneateles School District.
Pat Brown opened with a beautiful quote from Margret Meade where she expressed her belief that “a few caring people can change the world.”  Pat noted that as a result of Nancy Lewis’s ongoing efforts to improve education Nancy has broadened opportunities for our young people &  thereby,”improved our world.” Pat said that Nancy was totally committed to her students. To Nancy students always came first. Lori Ruhlman  thanked Nancy for playing a key role in our club’s Rotary Exchange Program.
Lori Ruhlman spoke to Nancy's dedication to the Youth Exchange program.  Lori said Nancy “opened her home & her heart to our exchange students.”
Club Foundation Chair, Chuck O'Neil formally read the Paul Harris Fellow citation & presented Nancy with the PHF pin & medallion.
L-R: Chuck, Lori, Nancy, Amy & Prez Bill
Our Guests - Nancy & Chuck Lewis, Pat Brown & Mary Fitzgibbons
