Program---Gard Lorey opened his presentation showing slides of Honduras’s natural beauty. Unlike neighboring El Salvador, Honduras has been spared the ravages of civil war. The people of Honduras are very poor & underserved medically & dentally. Last year Gard joined several physicians who went to Honduras to treat the Honduran people. The Honduran clinics Gard worked in were very basic & lacked dental chairs & proper dental lights. To treat his Honduran patients Gard had to improvise & to adjust by using the dental he brought with him. Fortunately Gard had a very capable & bilingual Honduran nurse to assist him. Gard & his Honduran nursing assistant traveled to several sites in Honduras treating on average, about 45 patients a day. Much of Honduras is plagued by local roving bands of very tough bandits. Just before their tour was over one of the main bandit leaders came to Gard seeking dental care for his badly infected teeth. Although it was a very anxious situation, Gard was able to successfully extract some of the bandit leaders infected teeth. Gad was touched by thankful the Hondurans were for thr dental & medical care they received. Throughout his talk Gard used humor to brighten the plight of the people he served. 50-50-Bill Stevens????

DISTRICT CONFERENCE - The very successful D7150 2015 Conference was held this past weekend at the Welch Allyn Lodge and was attended by 31 folks from; the Skaneateles Rotary clubs, their guests, Youth Exchange students, Youth Award honorees and local veterans from previous Honor Flights. The premier event was the presentation of the flags by the Youth Exchange students from across our district. RI Presidents Rep, PDG Lee Phares, for Ft. Lauderdale likened our YE program to a United Nations of Youth. The event included; many excellent breakouts on Rotary information and membership, social media, award presentation to outstanding Rotarians and clubs of the year, outstanding musical entertainment following both the Friday and Saturday dinners, and loads and loads of friendship exchanges. Total attendance was 225+. The Skaneateles club was tops in attendance.
The 2016 conference will be held at the Holiday Inn in Auburn on the last weekend of April, 2016. It is a full weekend event, and "the prices are right". Mark your calendars for another "close by" conference.

TREES AND ROTARY YOUTH - On Saturday April 25thJim Lanning, President of the Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary Club, set up & coordinated a “tree planning party” in Austin Park, Skaneateles. This was a coordinated effort with the Skaneateles Rotary clubs and the 2015 District 7150 Rotary conference, held at the Welch Allyn Lodge.
On Saturday morning, under Jim Lanning’s guidance and the D7150 YE committee, nineteen Rotary Exchange Students from Rotary Clubs throughout Rotary District 7150 dug holes for the planting of three 15’ saplings. Throughout the digging & planting oversight & instruction was provided by Skaneateles’s consulting arborist Fernando Araya. For the trees to thrive the holes dug by the Rotary Exchange students had to be dug to precise specifications.
All of our Rotary Exchange students enjoyed this educational experience. In the afternoon ten Rotary Interact students from SCHS, with Interact Coordinators Karen Price & Lori Ruhlman, prepared & planted the three saplings in the holes dug by our Rotary Exchange students. These young trees had to be carefully prepared for planting. Two of the trees are “Fall Fiesta Sugar Maples”. Arborist Fernando said that in the Fall the leaves of these trees become bright with vibrant yellow, orange & red colors. The third tree planted is a “Northern Red Oak. Arborist Frenando explained that all trees, throughout the world, are named through a “binomial nomenclature" developed by a Swedish Botanist in the 18th century. Jim Lanning told our Rotary Interact students that the three trees were planted in honor of our Sunrise Club, our Interact Club & our Evening Club.

Skaneateles Rotary Foundation Annual Meeting May 28-The annual meeting of our club’s local Skaneateles Rotary Foundation (SRF) will be our program at our Thursday May 28 club meeting. This annual meeting is required by the SRF’s by-laws of incorporation and all Skaneateles Rotarians as members of the SRF are encouraged to attend. The meeting agenda will include background on the SRF, the status of the campaign to create a permanent endowment fund, a financial review of the 2014/15 fiscal year, a vote on a change to the by-laws and the election of two new SRF trustees (Kathy Crelot and Peter Adams are the nominees). Revisions to the Skaneateles Rotary Foundation Bylaws ... by Doug Rutan
Your Board of Trustees of the Foundation recommend adopting the following language for Article III/Section 12 of the By Laws. The new section clearly articulates the Trustees responsibilities and allows them the flexibility to place funds with a professional investment firm such as the CNY Community Foundation. We will vote on this at the Annual Meeting of the Foundation on May 28.
Article III – Trustees, Officers and their Duties
Section 12. It shall be the duty of the Trustees, and they shall be vested with the power to, control and manage the affairs, funds and finances of the Foundation. The Board may, in its discretion, appoint a depository agent and/or investment manager to manage any and all funds and property of the Foundation.
The Trustees shall also be vested with the power to establish a Permanent Endowment Fund to support the programs of the Foundation in perpetuity. The investment objective of the Permanent Endowment Fund shall be to invest in a portfolio that allows for capital to be preserved and enhanced over time, both in real and nominal terms, and that is expected to produce an average annual return that at least equals inflation, plus any endowment spending, without undue risk.
2015-16 Skaneateles Rotary Youth Exchange - The 2015-16 Rotary Youth Exchange students have been selected and will be departing this summer for a year as exchange students abroad. They are: Sofia Darovskikh, going to Finland, and Zach Driscoll going to Germany. We congratulate them upon their selections and wish them all the best on their "adventure of a lifetime".
