DENTAL UNIT to MISSION of MIRACLES ... by Cathy Powell
The Rotary Foundation of Skaneateles continues to strive to give service not only to the local community, but also to the world in need. Shown here is a picture of Dr. Gard Lorey, D.D.S., being presented with a portable Dental Unit which he will be taking on the Miracle of Mission's annual trip to El-Salvador this winter.
The unit was funded from a 'matching grant' from the Rotary District Rotary7150 with our local Rotary and will be a permanent addition to the Mission's care providers throughout the year.
Annual Christmas Fund Raiser, December 1st
The Skaneateles Rotary Club’s annual Christmas fund raiser will be held on Thursday December 1st at the Skaneateles Country Club. We will begin with a happy hour at 6 PM followed by a family style turkey dinner at 7 PM. Tickets are $25.  Contact Amy Tormey at tormeyesl@verizon.net for reservations.
Don't Forget - the organizing committee needs our Rotarian's support in coming up with raffle prizes. The goal is to have at least 50% of attendees win a prize. While local merchants and professionals will be canvassed again this year for prize donations, all Rotarians are also asked to donate prizes such as a bottle of wine, a gift card, etc. Please let Roy McDonald or David Piper know in advance of the event what you will be bringing in the way of a prize. Even if you can’t attend the event, please contribute a raffle prize.

The following members attended this meeting: Jack Hyatt, Amy Tormey, Roy MacDonald, Dale Zabel ,Dave Piper, Gard Lorey, John Moran, Jim McQuiggan & Bill Conole. The committee received guidance from longstanding committee members Guido van der Ven & Robin Jowaisas. Peter Adams reviewed everyone's assignments for this year's dinner. All of the committee members have either begun their assigned tasks for this year's dinner or are on track to do so. They members agreed to meet next week briefly for a progress report.
Announcements
Oh dear he hit a  deer - Just before our regular meeting President called to say that he'd hit a deer in rural Chenango County. Bill Conole served as President Pro Tem for this week's "Club Assembly".
Kathy Crelot Sworn into the Navy - Bill directed everyone's attention to this weeks front page article in the Skaneateles Journal featuring an article & picture of a young Kathy Crelot being sworn into the Navy by her dad.
Projects & Discussions -
Portable Dental Equipment - (see article above) Gard Lorey displayed the capabilities of a sturdy, portable dental unit donated to Mission of Miracles through a RF District Grant  . The grant for this high tech equipment was written by Jim McQuiggan & Kathy Powell. Gard demonstrated the capabilities of this dental equipment & explained that with this light, portable suitcase-equipment dentists are able to render restorative dental care in rural 3rd world countries. Gard noted that this chair will be used in El Salvador & in Honduras soon. Gard volunteers to go the these countries with a team of dentists & medical caregivers, like Doug Powell, through a  sponsorship by the Episcopal Church. Gard thanked Jim McQuiggan & Kathy Powell, who were assisted by Ward,  for writing the Rotary Grant that made the purchase of this vital piece of equipment possible. Bill Conole emphasized that tis is another example of our Rotary Foundation serving our world
2016 SCC Christmas Fundraiser - Amy Tormey presented an update on this year's dinner & the work of the committee. Chuck O' Neil reminded everyone that the proceeds from this fund raiser serves our Skaneateles & Spafford Food Pantries.
Weekly Speakers - Bill reviewed our speakers for our next two months. Next week Carrie Scholz, a Health Care Navigator is speaking.
Christmas Bell Ringing - With his ever present clip board, John Moran reviewed our 2016 Bell Ringing Schedule. Only a few time slots remain open.
Polio Plus - Through his "bottle-stopper  challenge" fund raiser Ward has raised more $1300 for Polio Plus. Ward gives a beautifully hand crafted wine stopper to anyone contributing $50, or more, to Polio eradication.
Dictionary Project - Ward updated the membership on the status of the Dictionary / Thesaurus project at State Street School.  Materials are in and we are awaiting the date and time for distribution.
