Host families needed … help spread the word!
Skaneateles has a remarkable history of sending students around the world and receiving students from around the world.
In 2018-19, the Skaneateles Rotary Club will send four students around the globe (to Japan, Paraguay, Taiwan and Austria). In exchange, we will welcome two exchange students to our community, our high school and our homes. Tymoteusz Juncewicz  will come from Poland and Gahyeon Han  will come from South Korea.
We need your help! Can you host? Would you like to know more?  Or do you know someone who might want to know more?
We need three families for each student. (Exchange students experience three families during their year abroad).
Since 1996, the Skaneateles Rotary Club has welcomed 79 in-bound Rotary Youth Exchange students and has sent 105 out-bound students.
We need help because it has become harder to find host families in recent years.
To learn more, ask any member of our Youth Exchange Committee:  Gard Lorey (727-5461), Karen Price, Dale Drake, Jim McQuiggan, Lori Ruhlman (729-2831).
We are all committed to this program because we sent our children abroad.  We also have all hosted (multiple times) and have found the experience enriching -- and well worth the modifications that must be made for the short time period. We now have "children" all around the world!

LAST WEEK: .... by Bill Conole
THE BEGINNINGS
Pancake Breakfast - Acting President Bill Conole thanked the club members for pitching in & working so hard to make our 50thAnnual Pancake Breakfast a success. Our Pancake Breakfast Team is still tabulating our earnings & expenses. A detailed report will be given in the next two meetings.
Thank you Notes - Bill read two thank you notes. The Onondaga Presbyterian Church thanked our club for our generous support for their 2018 Syracuse Work Camp Program. The second note from the Lyons National Bank congratulated our club on our “milestone 50th year of Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast.
THE PROGRAM - Syracuse First Tee Children's Program
John Ralph, alumnus of our club & currently a member the Skaneateles Sunrise Club, introduced Peter Weber, the Executive Director of the First Tee. Peter began his presentation by giving a brief history of the First Tee, nationally, & in Syracuse. Peter cited the First Tee’s mission providing at risk, underprivileged & other young people with the necessary mentoring skills & values to help enhance their character & outlook in the community.
First Tee started 10 years ago in Syracuse with 40 kids. Over the past decade it has grown to serve over 900 kids today.
Peter stressed that the First Day aims to play a critical role in building life skills & in instilling 9 Core Values in young people. These Core Values are; HONESTY, INTEGRITY, SPORTSMANSHIP, RESPECT, CONFIDENCE, RESPONSIBILTY, PERERVERANCE, COURTESY, JUDGEMENT.
Peter noted that today The First Tee draws young people from wide spectrum of our community. The program has students from inner city schools, CBA & Skaneateles & many other suburban schools. In almost every case, these students benefit tangibly benefited from this program. Currently the program is 40% girls & 46% minorities. Peter noted that this program is expensive to operate & to maintain.
Peter enjoys fund raising, but it is an ongoing challenge.  Last year the program raised almost a million dollars but this money is quickly dedicated to enhancing the program for the benefit of the participating kids. Peter, with his missionary zeal, is the program’s sole employee.
Peter introduced Zack Maslyn, the SCC Golf Pro, who strongly endorsed the merits of this worthwhile program.  Zack noted that giving young children the opportunity to learn golf increases their focus & gives them a sport they can play for the rest of their lives. In closing Peter described how this program contributed to the success his grown son & daughter are achieving in the business world. Peter responded to many questions from our members.
50/50 - Was fittingly won by Gard after his friend Zack drew the winning card for him. In spite of this Gard drew the jack of spades instead of the elusive queen of spades.
Guests - John Ralph, Sunrise member, Peter Weber, speaker, Zack Maslyn, SCC Golf Pro.

Rockin' With Rotary - July 20-22

Auburn Rotarians are gearing up for the second annual Rotary Ribs Rhythm & Blues Festival, July 20-22 on Deauville Island at Emerson Park in Auburn. We've added a free concert night for Friday July 20th featuring a Syracuse favorite, Chief Big
Way!

The Rotary Ribs Rhythm & Blues Festival is a Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) sanctioned event and New York State championship. Both amateur and professional BBQ teams from the Northeast and Canada compete for the best ribs, brisket, pork and chicken. And several of these teams will be selling their BBQ! The weekend's Grand Champion receives an automatic invitation to the Jack Daniels National Championship in October. The music is Rhythm & Blues, with great performers from Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and Woodstock, NY. Tickets are $10 for adults, $12 for kids ages 12 and under. We invite and welcome all District 7150 Rotarians to come and enjoy this great event with us.

PACK'N FOR THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD -  .... by Ward Vuillemot
Mark Your Calendars - On Sunday, Jul 8, 2018 at 2 PM, the Skaneateles Rotarians and friends will be selecting and packing children's and reference books at the Annual Skaneteles Library book sales, located next to the Village Hall, in the old fire barn.  Once the book sales is over at 2 PM, we will be permitted to glean the books for the CNY Books for the World project.  The selected books will eventually make their way to the children in 3rd world countries via the Rotarian BFTW project.  The gleaning and packing typically takes from one to two hours.  See ye there!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"When an individual, a sect, a clique or a nation hates and despises another individual, sect, clique or nation, he/she or they simply do not know the objects of their hatred. Ignorance is at the bottom of it."  .... Paul Harris, founder of Rotary
