MEETING Oct 19th, 2023 .... by Mary
The Beginnings: President Elect Ayham opened the meeting by leading us in the Pledge, Four Way Test and welcoming our guest, Marty Masterpole, Onondaga County Comptroller.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Marv announced that the Holiday Basket Dinner will be held at the Skaneateles Country Club on Thursday, December 7th.  Planning has begun!  Ayham thanked everyone that participated in the Duck Dash.  It was a great success earning some $$ for our club to support worthy causes.  Ayham said there were "more ducks than people."  Dave Lee is now the custodian of the ducks.
The Program:  Bill C introduced Marty Masterpole, Syracuse native and Onondaga County Comptroller for the last four years.  As Comptoller, Marty supervises all internal County audits and extends those services to towns and villages.  Over 4000 employee payroll records are audited as well as all payments by County government.  The Comptoller's office also issues certified annual financial statements.  At present the county finances include about $300M in the "rainy day fund."  However $75M is earmarked for an aquarium.  Sales tax revenues have increased due to Amazon, gasoline and vehicle sales.  Thanks to Marty Masterpole for an informative meeting.
PROPOSED MEMBER NOTICE:
The Board of Directors approved DrPamela Stern's membership application via email ballot on Oct. 2nd.  Pamela first joined Rotary in 1995 and has been a member of the Syracuse Sunrise club since 2014.
Pamela has attended our meetings & she participated in the Youth Exchange program at the district and local levels for the past year.  Pam is retired and is classified as a School Psychologist.  She lives a 341 Summerhaven Dr. North, E. Syracuse and is sponsored by Lee Bennett.  We look forward to welcoming Pam as our newest member.
If there are no objections made in writing to the Club Secretary by Oct 29th, dues are paid, she will be inducted into our membership at our meeting of Nov 2nd, or later.

HOLIDAY BASKET DINNER
Plans are under way for our annual Holiday Basket Dinner to benefit the local food pantries and Skaneateles Outreach.  It will be held on Thursday, Dec 7th at the Skaneateles Country Club. You can reserve a table of 8 or 10 by emailing or calling Craig at cfroelich75@gmail.com or 405-517-8831.  We are also seeking items for the Silent Auction which was a great success last year. If you would like to donate an item or can solicit an item from a local business let Marv know at:  langmarvin55@gmail.com or 315-651-6420.
SERVICE PROJECTS Recap
Although it's been a while since we've met a lot of good things have been going on within the club over the last few weeks.  "Service above self " is happening!
> Duck DashClub members sold tickets, labelled ducks, moved equipment and supplies, set up the race course, sold pizza and drinks, fetched ducks from the creek and helped with the event breakdown.....and had fun doing all of this!  A huge "thank you" to Ayham for his organization of this event!
>  WalkathonIt was a cool and rainy Saturday morning when several club members, friends and family joined together to walk a two mile course for the Matthews Auto Walkathon.  We were joined by Vince's grandson and Woody, the pack leader of the Buterbaugh clan.  Over $400 was raised for the Golisano Children's Hospital in Syracuse.  Hot coffee and pastries (compliments of Ed and Brenda Evans) were enjoyed by all at the end of our trek.  Thanks to Bill B for organizing this event and to Ed and Brenda for the goodies!
> Youth ExchangeOur Youth Exchange Committee has been busy working with the high school to recruit and interview potential youth exchange students for the 2024-2025 year.
> Dictionary ProjectCraig is working with State Street School to get a brand-new dictionary into the hands of every third grader.  We'll let you know when this is done and thanks to Craig for taking this on.
> Holiday Basket DinnerOur annual dinner to benefit the local food pantries and Skaneateles Outreach is scheduled for December 7th at the Skaneateles Country Club.  The event committee met to begin the planning process and we will keep you posted.  Thanks to Marv for chairing the planning committee.
2nd Annual JUDGE BEN WILES CRUISE
Over 50 club members, spouses, friends, prospective new members, and Sunrise members gathered for a cocktail cruise on the Judge Ben Wiles last Thursday.  It was a beautiful evening on a beautiful lake with great company.  Thanks to everyone who brought goodies to share and a huge thank you to Ben Eberhardt, Captain of the Judge.
SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES this month!
An opportunity to help your local & world communities:
World Polio Day - October 24th

YOUR DISTRICT 7150
RESPONDS TO CRISIS
Our Rotary District (D7150) Rotarians have been actively assisting people across the globe for many years.  CLICK HERE to learn how we recently responded to the immediate need for fresh water for the of people in Ukraine.  This is an excellent example of local Rotarians working with Rotarians abroad to assist people in need around our world.   ... by Ward
24 October is WORLD POLIO DAY
As World Polio Day approaches, we need your help to amplify our message about eradicating polio to protect the world’s children from a devastating disease.
We have made tremendous progress since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched:
  • A 99.9% reduction in cases of illness caused by wild poliovirus
  • 3 billion children immunized
  • 125 countries where polio was endemic reduced to two — Afghanistan and Pakistan — with the virus contained in just a few districts and provinces
But even just one case still represents one child’s life forever changed by polio. That’s why Rotary members must remain tenacious and keep our promise: We won’t stop until we know that no child will ever again experience the paralyzing effects of polio
