Last Week April 6, 2023 .... by Mary Membership/Attendance - 41 active members, 14 attending. Guests - Julie Littlefield, John Buterbaugh (Bill's son), Noor Ahmed (Ayham's brother visiting from afar) and Mike Panasci (Ayham's friend) The Meeting - President Ed called the meeting to order, welcomed our guests and club members, and led us in the Pledge and the Four (five) Way Test. Bill B reminded us about this coming Thursday's Happy Hour at the Legion hosted by Rosemary and Mike. Bill also gave us the "heads up" on a very special meeting planned for May 4th. Spouses and Significant Others are invited to a special event focusing on the Youth Exchange Program and honoring members who have reached a Paul Harris milestone. Andy brought us up to date on Food Drive plans. The drive will benefit the Skaneateles and Spafford pantries. Communication is being developed and the plan is to hand out bags at the April 20th meeting. Bags will be collected and taken to Ed's house for sorting and delivery to the pantries. Watch on social media for more info. Our friends at Delmonico Insurance will also be collecting for the drive. The Program- Bill B introduced our guest speaker Nick Pitarys, Master Brewer and Distiller and Skaneateles neighbor. In Bill's introduction he said that Nick is "smart, funny and spent most of his life around beer, wine and distilled spirits." Nick spent 35 years at Anheuser-Busch in charge of Quality Control and has also worked with local businesses, Anyela's and Last Shot Distillery and taught at Cornell. We learned about the four phases of brewing beer and that beer was first invented in 1516!! We also learned that the shelf life of bottled and canned beer is 110 day and beer on tap has a shelf life of 50 days. So, if you have beer in your fridge that is approaching that age you'd better drink it! A table of Rotarians was all set to apply for the position of "Taster" until they learned from Nick that training for the position takes five years! Nick shared samples of freshly brewed beer and seltzers with us. Nick's presentation was informative and engaging generating many questions from members and guests. |
