PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Bill Conole
Last evening's speaker Jeff Comanici, Director of Philanthropy Crouse Hospital spoke compellingly & compassionately about how Crouse Hospital's Tier 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is heroically saving preemie babies & babies born with complex medical issues. Now Crouse is embarking on a $30,000,000 campaign to renovate their renown NICU. To raise money for their NICU Crouse is holding their 3rd Polo For Preemies Fundraising Event  on Sunday July 29th at the Skaneateles Polo Field.
I want to take this opportunity to thank outgoing President Mary Giroux for serving our club & Rotary so well during the past year. As incoming president I look forward to an exciting & challenging year to come. Together we must strive to make our club stronger so we can serve our community better.

LAST WEEK: .... by Mary Giroux
The Beginnings
Thanks - President Bill Conole opened the meeting with a "thank you" to members for the opportunity to serve as president.
Pancake Breakfast results - Bill reviewed pancake breakfast results which are in line with previous years. Aadditional funds were generated by the sponsorship drive and the Allyn foundation grant.
Thanks for  Scholarship - A "thank you" note from Kathryn Nicholson, the recipient of this year's scholarship was read.
Other comments -Bill also cited the success of the library book sale, the 80th Regatta and the Books for the World packing, all of which were supported by volunteers from the club.
BookLeggers - Ward  thanked all of the "bookleggers"  for packing a record three pallets of books from the library sale.
The Program - Polo for Preemies
Bill introduced our guest speaker Jeff Comenici, Director of Philanthropy at Crouse.  Jeff graciously thanked our club for its support of Polo for Preemies in past years and told us about the plans for updating and expanding the Crouse NICU.  Polo for Preemies is one of the events raising money for this project.  It takes place on Sunday, July 29th at the Skaneateles Polo Field beginning at 1:00PM. Members were asked to spread the word and display yard signs.
The NICU is a vital part of the health care delivery system in Central NY serving a 14 county area with an average weekly patient census of 57 babies.  The NICU cares for over 1,000 infants each year that are born prematurely or in need of critical care.    In addition the unit maintains a 24 hour transport team that cares for babies in transit from one hospital to another.  The expansion of the NICU will provide additional patient care space, additional space for equipment, a new human milk bank, and rooms where families may stay with their ill newborn.  The cost of the expansion is estimated at $30 million.

50/50 - Was won by Mary Giroux, but alas the Queen of Spades was not drawn
Guests: Jeff Comenici, Director of Philanthropy, Crouse Health.
Attendance - Members attending: 23 at 43% attendance

HOST FAMILY NEEDED
Help spread the word!
Skaneateles has a remarkable history of sending students around the world and receiving students from around the world.
In 2018-19, the Skaneateles Rotary Club will send four students around the globe (to Japan, Paraguay, Taiwan and Austria). In exchange, we will welcome two exchange students to our community, our high school and our homes. Tymoteusz Juncewicz  will come from Poland and Gahyeon Han  will come from South Korea.
We need your help! Can you host? Would you like to know more?  Or do you know someone who might want to know more?
We need three families for each student. (Exchange students experience three families during their year abroad).
Since 1996, the Skaneateles Rotary Club has welcomed 79 in-bound Rotary Youth Exchange students and has sent 105 out-bound students.
We need help because it has become harder to find host families in recent years.
To learn more, ask any member of our Youth Exchange Committee:  Gard Lorey (727-5461), Karen Price, Dale Drake, Jim McQuiggan, Lori Ruhlman (729-2831).
We are all committed to this program because we sent our children abroad.  We also have all hosted (multiple times) and have found the experience enriching -- and well worth the modifications that must be made for the short time period. We now have "children" all around the world!
