January 22, 2026 Meeting
President Andy opened the meeting by welcoming our guests: Bill Drake and Tom Herbert from WRVO Public Media.
Following are announcements:
Bill B reminded us that we are always looking for meeting speakers. Please let either Bill Buterbaugh or Bill Conole know if you have a prospect. And Bill B will be providing us with an updated club calendar soon. Thanks to Bill for keeping us on the straight and narrow with the club schedule!
Bill B also let us know that our 3rd annual "Serve and Clean-up Crew" service project at The Samaritan Center in Syracuse will be on Saturday, May 30 from 12:30 to 3:00. Mark your calendar!
Andy announced that we will have a Rotary Food drive for local pantries with a pickup date of Saturday April 25th. Our Master Chef, Ed Evans, will be serving a delicious breakfast at the drop off site (Ed's house). Andy also reminded us that there is no meeting this upcoming Thursday. Winterfest is Saturday the 31st and many club members will be helping our fellow Rotarians from the Sunrise Club.
Rosemary introduced our speakers, Bill Drake and Tom Herbert from WRVO Public Media. Many of us are familiar with Bill's voice which we hear quite often on the radio. Bill is the Station Manager of WRVO. Tom is the Underwriting Account Manager. WRVO is a public service operation providing news and information via radio and digital platforms. Based in Oswego, WRVO has a 13-station network serving 20 counties. In addition to locally produced shows, as an NPR (National Public Radio) member organization they have access to NPR programming. As a result of the current administration's foolish and senseless cuts WRVO lost $182,000 in federal funding this year. Much of that has been made up due to the generosity of listeners. However, future years will be a challenge. WRVO's income sources are now listener memberships, underwriting (advertising) and grants. Tom Herbert explained how the underwriting process works. Thanks to Bill and Tom for their presentation on the valuable community service!
Ayham led us in the Four (Five) Way Test in closing.
They are at it again – Rotary’s dedicated fundraising team of Polar Plungers. Skaneateles’ annual Polar Plunge in Skaneateles Lake will again coincide and be part of the Winterfest festivities on Saturday, January 31 at 12:30pm. The bone-chilling – yet invigorating – event raises money for the Skaneateles First Department, SAVES and the Skaneateles Education Foundation. Our club will have a team consisting of Jason Armijo, Ayham Boucher, Rosemary Mondo, Ed Evans, Jeff LaMarca and Bradley Wilson. Other plungers are welcome to join the group, just contact Ayham or Rosemary for details. Ed Evans provides a hot soup warmup afterwards at the Bluewater Grille for all participating plungers. Support is Needed: There are multiple ways you can support our team of plungers and the overall fundraising effort:
Write a check payable to: Skaneateles Polar Plunge and mail it to Rosemary at 10 W Genesee St, Apt 1, Skaneateles, NY 13152
And be sure to show up at the City Dock at 12:30 on January 31 to cheer our team on as theybrave the icy waters for three great local causes.
Club Happy Dollars totaling $154 from the January 22nd meeting are being donated to the cause!
