D7150 PASSPORT PROJECT... by Pres.. Mary Giroux
The new District 7150 Passport Project is to encourage Fellowship and Service among clubs within the District:
Passport to Fellowship - Four members from each club visit four different clubs within the District and have their "passport" signed by a member of the club visited.
Passport to Service - Four members from each club provide service with four different clubs within the District and have their "passport" document signed by a member of the club who is also involved in the service being provided.
Completion of the above goals by April 15, 2018 will qualify the club for a Passport award to be presented at the District Conference April 27-29.

We had an informative talk by Rich Roche about the inland port site proposals and the complexities of shipping by water. Thank you John O'Sullivan for arranging for Rich to speak.

THE BEGININGS:
50THSkaneateles Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast - President Mary noted that John Moran & Jim McQuiggan are soliciting merchants to seek their sponsorship for our 2018 Pancake Breakfast. Members can help John & Jim in this effort by contacting merchants they know or do business with. John Moran passed around a list of 40 local merchants & asked members to sign their name next to merchants yhey know. Jim McQuiggan reminded everyone that the money raised from our pancake breakfast supports our worthy cause contributions. Skaneateles Sunrise Winter Festival & Polar Plunge - Mary reminded everyone that the Winter Festival I being held this weekend. Many of our members singed up to assist the Sunrise Club. Amy Tormey asked members to support the Polar Plunge. The festival & the Polar Plunge are major fundraisers for local worthy causes.
2018 Women’s Day Dinner - Amy Tormey reviewed plans for this year’s Women’s Day Dinner scheduled on this Thursday March 8, 2018. This year our dinner falls on the same day as the National Women’s Day Celebration. Tickets for the dinner are $50.

THE PROGRAM
Proposed Inland Port in the Syracuse Area - John O’Sullivan introduced our speaker Rich Roche. Rick is a graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy. Rich’s education & maritime experience make him uniquely qualified in the maritime industry. His extensive career in the logistics industry qualifies him as an expert in cargo claims, shipper’s insurance & overseas agent management. Currently Rick is the Vice President, International Transportation at Mohawk Global Logistics.
Rich opened his presentation with a slide presentation on the Inland Port of New York. This massive inland port vividly displays how technology can dramatically improve shipping & transportation. Huge amounts of goods are now shipped in large containers that are loaded onto very large ships by giant crains. Over the past few decades the containers & the ships designed to carry them have grown increasingly larger & more efficient. For the past several years logistics experts have been planning various options & sites to bring an inland port to the Syracuse Area. This inland port can greatly enhance CNY’s chances of attracting new industries by providing a state of the art transportation hub.
Rich described how Greenville, SC has prospered after building an inland sea port like the one planned for Syracuse. As a result of this inland port BMW built a lager plant in Greenville.
Currently flour sites are being considered for an inland port in CNY. They are; 1-Dewitt rail yard, 2- Jamesvile, 3-Camillus and 4-Dewitt. Rich detailed the pros & cons of each site. All things considered Rich favors the Jamesville site. Rich stressed that this inland port is a tremendous opportunity for CNY & Upstate New York. After years of deliberations it’s now time for action.
Rich responded to several questions from our members on modern transportation & logistics & on the options for an inland port in CNY.
