PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Bill Conole
YOUTH EXCHANGE: Our speaker last evening, Sandi Frackenpohl spoke warmly & compellingly on how important our club’s Youth Exchange Program is. Sandi’s daughter, Abby was an exchange student in Poland & is now a professional linguist proficient in 4-5 languages. Sandi’s son Alex was an exchange student in Japan. Alex continued his study of Japanese in Colgate University. Over the past 15 years Sandi & her husband Steve have hosted 7 inbound YE students. Sandi enthused that these YE students brought “the world into our home”.
Our YE Program brings the word to our village & to our high school. Since 1996 our club has sponsored over 110 students in our YE outbound program. The outbound program offers our Skaneateles students opportunities to learn foreign languages & to experience different cultures.  Our YE Program is more active & more robust than any club in our Rotary District & beyond. Today for a number of reasons it is becoming increasingly difficult to bring YE inbound students to the US.
I want to take this opportunity to salute our YE Team composed of Gard Lorey, John O’Sullivan, Karen Price, Lori Ruhlman & Lee Bennet. Thanks also go to the SCS Staff for welcoming our YE inbound students into their classes & activities. And last but not least thanks go to our host families for their warm hospitality.
PUBLICITY: Since mid October there have been 4 major articles in the Skaneateles Press about our club. Thanks go to Lori Ruhlman, Cathy Powell, & Mary Giroux for their efforts to make our community more aware of the great things our club is doing to serve our residents & our world.
POLIO: For his unstinting efforts to raise money for Polio, Ward Vuillemot has gained well deserved national & international recognition. Over the past 2 years Ward has, single handedly, raised an astounding $23,000 for Polio Plus.
Trading Banner from Gatinara Rotary Club, Italy
About 7 or 8 years ago, Alex Frachenpohi was in Italy, during the summer break, teaching English.  While there he visited the Gatinara Rotary Club and was presented with their trading banner.  His mother, Sandi Frachenpohi, presented the banner to Pres. Bill during her visit to our club last week.  To see more of our recent banners, check out our banner photo album page by CLICKING HERE.

The Program:
Sandi Frackenpohl spoke of her family's wonderful experiences hosting seven Rotary YE Students over the years.  In addition, her children have experienced exchanges in the past, resulting in the Frachenpohl's having extended family around the world.
Sandi also spoke of her experiences as a literacy volunteer.  She specifically related her tutoring of a Silcilian family who recently moved to Auburn and have started a new restaurant, Gusto Italiano. She introduced us to Gusto and his daughter, Mia.
Sandi presented the club with a Rotary club banner from Italy that her son, Alex, collected on one of his trips to that country 8 or 9 years ago. (see above)

Annual Christmas Fundraiser, Dec. 6th
... by Cheryl Silvestrini
The Skaneateles Rotary Club’s Annual Christmas Fundraiser will be held on Thursday, December 6th, at the Skaneateles Country Club.  We will begin with a happy hour at 6 p.m. followed by a family-style turkey dinner at 7 pm.  Tickets are $30 and can be reserved in tables of 8 or 10.  Contact Amy Tormey at tormeyesl@verizon.net for reservations.
Don’t Forget…The organizing committee needs our Rotarians’ support in securing raffle prizes.  The goal is to have at least 50% of attendees win a prize. While local merchants and professionals will be canvassed again this year for donations, all Rotarians are also asked to donate prizes such as a bottle of wine, a gift card, etc.  Please let Roy MacDonald or David Piper know in advance of the event what you will be bringing in the way of a prize.  Even if you can’t attend the event, please contribute a raffle prize.
200 Club Fundraiser ... by Cheryl
It may not be as exciting as cracking eggs or flipping pancakes, but the “200 Club” Raffle is an easy way to raise money to benefit community and youth groups.  Here’s how it works:  we sell 200 tickets at $20 each for a total of $4,000.  We give away $1250 in prizes which leaves us with $2750 to use for worthy causes.
We will sell tickets starting 10/18/18.  Two $50 prizes will be drawn at our Club Meetings on 11/15, 11/29, 12/13, 12/20, and 1/3.  On 1/10, we will draw a $250 winner, as well as the $500 Grand Prize winner.  Also, all weekly winners will be put back into the raffle and be eligible for the Grand Prize!
We need to sell all 200 tickets for this raffle to work as outlined, so please consider selling at least 5 tickets to family, friends, co-workers, etc. – and don’t forget to buy your own!  Cheryl will have tickets available at all weekly meetings.  If paying by check, please make payable to Skaneateles Rotary Foundation.  Be sure the contact information is completed on the ticket and give that portion of the ticket to Cheryl along with ticket money/checks.  Thank you and good luck to everyone!
DID YOU KNOW?
SLEEP TIGHT
Early beds were made with a wooden frame. Ropes were tied across the frame in a criss-cross pattern. A Straw mattress was then put on top of the ropes. Over time the ropes stretched, causing the bed to sag. The owner would then tighten the ropes to get a better night's sleep.
