PRESIDENT'S CORNER ... by Prez Bill
Greetings Skantarians! Last week gave us a chance to discuss, as a Club, a plethora of Club business. Front and center was Lori Ruhlman's presentation on the upcoming Women's Day event at The Lodge and the distribution of posters and flyer advertising same. Thank you, Lori! There was also discussion about our 2017 grant application and a couple of worthy causes were identified. Any further suggestions should be brought to the attention of Cathy Powell, our Club's grant chairperson. Thank you and see you all at the Valentine's Day Dinner!
DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS TRANSPORT NEWORK Disabled Dewitt Rotary donated $1444 and Skaneateles Rotary donated $ 500 to purchase magnetic signs for the vans to generate awareness to veterans and to solicit volunteers.The DAV transport vans cover all of Central New York, Mohawk Valley and up north. Volunteer drivers are very much needed by DAV ! BTW. kudos to our own John Moran is one of the many volunteer that drive these vehicle. Summary Notes of Feb 09, 2017 Meeting... by Ward
Your Board of Directors met last week and the following is a summary of discussions points and resolutions.
Minutes of last BOD - meeting approved. They are posted on the website.
Pancake Breakfast ticket cost was discussed and reviewed by Mary Giroux. She compared menus and cost with Marcellus and DeWitt, and concluded that we would keep the pricing we used in 2016.
Website Domain Name - fee for the next 5 years was approved for payment.
SRC Club Newsletter - is being held up as one of the best in our District. Also, Mary Giroux is now the Asst-Editor (fully trained) and will take over as Editor following her year a President. Click here for a chance on a readers award.
District Grants - Cathy is closing out the 2015-16 grant and we a seeking input for the 2016-17 grant. Two ideas came up; (1) Artificial hands through Dr. Dais, who spoke a few months ago, and (2) Shelter Box. We need to complete the application by the end of March.
Boys State participant funded through American Legion.
Rotary Foundation (2015-16) awards presented to SRC at the TRF dinner to our club was (1) outstanding district grant, (2) significant PolioEradication donations.
District Conference- The approval of the club funding president's conference fees and cost was approved.
Skaneateles Rotary Foundation financial statement, supplied by Kathy Crelot, was distributed and reviewed.
International Women's Day event was discussed by Pres Bill.
Program Review - Bill Conole review the upcoming programs he has arranged for in the future.
Member Mentoring - process / training was reviewed and discussed. Ward to supply Suzzette membership lists with sponsors shown.
Off Site Meetings - Prez Bill listing a few dates that the Sherwood would not be available and off site options discussed.
Next BOD Meeting - Mar. 16th at 5 PM at the Sherwood.

International Women's Day - Lori Ruhlman announced that our Club's 3rd annual International Women's Day celebration will be held on Thursday, March 9th at the Welch Allyn Lodge. Our first two events sold out. This year's theme is Alzheimer's Disease. Now that Polio is almost eradicated Lori recommends that Rotary join the cause to end Alzheimer's Disease. In the 20th century Polio crippled young people. In the 21st century Alzheimer's Disease is crippling older people. Lori reminded members that tickets may be purchased online for $50 per person. Lori, Suzette and Roberta displayed a beautiful sign designed by Kelly Hall for the 2017 IWD celebration.
Board Meeting - President Bill recapped items discussed at the Club Board meeting:
- Our Club is considering two Rotary grant projects. One is to purchase prosthetic arms for Dr. Daya's Global Health Volunteer Alliance. The other is to purchase a Rotary Shelter Box which provides essential aid to vulnerable survivors within days. Cathy Powell noted that grants must be submitted by March 31st.
- Mary Giroux's research on other clubs' pancake breakfast was reviewed and the Board decided to leave ticket prices and menus as is.
Dental Chair - Gard Lorey reported that the dental equipment our club helped fund is being used to effectively treat many patients in El Salvador.
Host Families - Gard Lorey announced that host families are needed for three of our exchange students.
Guests:Mike Nortman, speaker and Tim Donovan, Auburn Rotary Club member.
50/50 - Won by John Moran who generously turned his winnings over to the Club-The elusive Queen of Spades still hides in the dwindling deck.

International Women’s Day + Rotary = Making Change!

After nearly eradicating polio from the face of the earth, Rotary International has taken on another disease that impacts everyone and threatens to become a tsunami in terms of our health care system: Alzheimer’s Disease.
This is the focus of the Skaneateles Rotary Club’s third annual International Women’s Day Celebration, which is Thursday, March 9th, at the Lodge.
Rotarians in a club on Martha’s Vineyard started this now-global Rotary effort because they asked themselves: “With polio on the way out, what is the next disease that affects everybody?” The answer was clear: Alzheimer’s Disease.
While polio cripples the body, Alzheimer’s cripples the mind. Alzheimer’s not only devastates families, it devastates communities. If left unsolved, public health officials say this disease will devastate the entire health care system within the next ten years. It is being called the most critical public health crisis facing America. It is also being called a “tsunami” and “sinkhole” as told so well in a PBS documentary January 25th.
Why is it a focus of our Skaneateles Rotary Club’s International Women’s Day event? Women bear a disproportionate amount of the Alzheimer’s burden. They are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s, AND they are much more likely to be caregivers. Two-thirds of all Alzheimer’s caregivers are women.
