PRESIDENT'S CORNER ... by Prez Bill
Greetings Skantarians!   This past Thursday we were treated to an update by Skaneateles Central School District Superintendent Ken Slentz on the state of our schools and the trending challenges facing our students and the physical plant.  We have seen the future and it looks expensive.  We also received another update from Amy Tormey and Lori Ruhlman on the Women's Day event; it is right around the corner, folks please step up and buy your tickets on line today if you have not done so already!  And invite a friend while you are at it!  Thank you and stay healthy!
LAST WEEK: .... by Bill Conole
The Beginnings -  Prior to dinner Bill Conole presented Dr. Jamie Ciaccio with a Rotary cup.  A couple of years ago Jamie made a presentation to our club.  Enroute to the Inn Bill dropped Jamie's cup.  So two years later Jamie received his cup.
IWD Event - Amy Tormey and Lori Ruhlman reviewed plans and ticket sales for this year's International Women's Day celebration which will be held on Thursday, March 9th at the Welch Allyn Lodge.  This year's event is dedicated to those battling Alzheimer's Disease.  Lori and Amy urged club members to bring friends to the IWD event and to sell tickets for this worthy cause.
School District Update - SCSD Superintendent Ken Slentz presented a comprehensive review of the District's "strategic plan."  With the implementation of this plan the SCSD will be able to meet the coming educational challenges.  This plan is based on six dimensions of wellness to insure that our students/future leaders are well balanced, well rounded and nimble.  This plan includes specific strategies for instructional design.  Mr. Slentz updated us on plans to meet staffing, financial and facility concerns.  In closing, Mr. Slentz went over the highlights of the 2017-2018 budget.  Through careful planning Mr. Slentz's staff has been able to align the budget to the designs of the strategic plan thereby minimizing the impact on taxpayers.  Mr. Slentz responded to several questions from our members.
50/50 - Won by Charlie McElroy The elusive Queen of Spades remains concealed in the shrinking deck of cards
Guests - Jamie Ciaccio, friend of Roberta Williams & prospective member and Ken Slentz, SCSD Superintendent
Attendance - Members attending: 25 at 44% attendance

International Women’s Day + Rotary = Making Change!
This night will be a dynamic blend of community activism, Rotary goodwill, and fun among friends. Rally your friends and come join hands to make a difference!
After nearly eradicating polio from the face of the earth, Rotary International has taken on another disease that impacts everyone and threatens to become a tsunami in terms of our health care system: Alzheimer’s Disease.
This is the focus of the Skaneateles Rotary Club’s third annual International Women’s Day Celebration, which is Thursday, March 9th, at the Lodge.
Rotarians in a club on Martha’s Vineyard started this now-global Rotary effort because they asked themselves: “With polio on the way out, what is the next disease that affects everybody?”  The answer was clear:  Alzheimer’s Disease.
While polio cripples the body, Alzheimer’s cripples the mind. Alzheimer’s not only devastates families, it devastates communities. If left unsolved, public health officials say this disease will devastate the entire health care system within the next ten years. It is being called the most critical public health crisis facing America. It is also being called a “tsunami” and “sinkhole” as told so well in a PBS documentary January 25th.
Why is it a focus of our Skaneateles Rotary Club’s International Women’s Day event?  Women bear a disproportionate amount of the Alzheimer’s burden.  They are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s, AND they are much more likely to be caregivers.  Two-thirds of all Alzheimer’s caregivers are women.
The keynote speaker will be Rev. Cynthia Huling Hummel, D.Min. who, since being diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer's, has made it her new mission to share her story and insights about the disease.  Come listen to an amazing woman's first hand experience with Alzheimer's.
Join us for this festive night with a purpose!
Tickets are $50. Go to: www.iwd.yapsody.com to register.
All proceeds will combat Alzheimer’s disease.
Contact Amy Tormey with any questions: tormeyesl@verizon.net
