PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Mary Giroux
We enjoyed hearing from our guests representing the Girls Ambassador for Human Rights program, especially Eva Schooler and Lyana Cauther who are currently in the program. Vanessa Johnson told us how the program inspires young women to be ambassadors for open dialogue both at home and overseas. Thank you Amy Tormey for arranging this program.
Our Youth Exchange Program needs host families for three incoming students. If you can host a student for approximately 3 months or know of someone who may be interested please let Gard Lorey or Lori Ruhlman know. We have five outbound students who will be hosted overseas.
Pancake breakfast plans continue. It's not too early to recruit volunteers.

Your Board of Directors met last week and the following is a short summary of discussions points and resolutions.

Skaneateles Rotary Foundation financials were reviewed by Marv Langley.
Skaneateles Rotary Foundation structure and future proposal discussed by Chuck O'Neil
District Conference - Bill Conole urged members to attend the District Conf.
District Matching Grant Submitted - for sponsorship of 2018-19 YMCA Community Center scholarships.
Resignations - Two member's resignations accepted; both due to relocations (Skip Plank & Dale Zabel)
RYLA selection discussed. Of the 3 open slots between the two Skaneateles RC's, we have but 2 applications to date.
Club Programs - Bill Conole reviewed the upcoming Club programs.
Special menu items ordered by members, which exceed the allocated $15 are being billed back to the club. Mary to clarify accepted selections with the Inn and will address at an upcoming club meeting.
Worth Cause Giving - Cheryl Silvestrini reviewed three Worthy Cause requests and the BOD approved all three. They were:Habitat for Humanity, MOST Museum, and YMCA Scholarship Fund.

Exchange Students - According to Lori Ruhlman this year Skaneateles is sending 5 exchange students out & receiving 3 students. 9 host families are needed for the incoming exchange students & so far only one family has volunteered to host a student. President Mary urged members to consider hosting a student or to actively encourage their friends to serve as hosts.
Thank you notes - President Mary read thank you notes from: (1) The Matilda Gage Foundation (2) the Sunrise Rotary club for the assistance our club gave them in this year’s Winter Fest & for sponsoring an ice sculpture (3) From the Paige Butterfly Run & (4) Sarah Allen from the Habitat For Humanity.
THE PROGRAM - Girl Ambassadors
Bill Conole introduced our speaker Vanessa Johnson, Director of the Girl Ambassadors for Human Rights. Vanessa opened her presentation by noting that the mission of the Girl Ambassadors is to teach young ladies how to dialogue civilly with others who have divergent views & who are from diverse backgrounds. Recently the Girl Ambassadors met with the Akwesasne Mohawk Indians to engage in dialogue. Vanessa visited Ghana last year for 17 days. This gave her the opportunity to meet with & to discuss issues with young ladies from another continent.
The Girl Ambassadors have representatives from Skaneateles, Syracuse & from all areas of CNY. When they meet “Ambassadors” discuss concerns ranging from race relations, diversity, poverty& women’s rights. This program was started in 2012 & already there are 20 Girl Ambassador Clubs. Over the past six years the Girl Ambassadors have grown & are proving to have a very positive effect on the young ladies who participate in this organization.
Vanessa introduced two young ladies, Eva Schooler & Lyana Cauther. Both of these young ladies spoke compellingly on how participating in the Girl Ambassador Program has helped them mature & given them the confidence they need to set scholastic & career goals. At only 15 years old these young ladies spoke eloquently & with great poise.

50/50 - Was won by Bill Conole. Many members accused Bill of using prestidigitation to draw the heretofore elusive queen of spades, but draw it he did.
